[Question #6862] M genitalium

This is a question regarding my first post on this forum, since my partners uti symptoms after I had unprotected sex with a different partner she tested for stds such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, hsv, etc. I’m concerned again because she has started to complain about uti symptoms again, this is maybe a month & a half after the first one. Her urinalysis came back clean but she was on AZO and the doc said that it could make results in correct. She hasn’t gone to the doc yet but I am concerned this could be M genitalium?
Considering the ache in my penis that comes and goes as well as the testicles. No discharge from me but occasional drip after urinating.  Does this sound like mf? How common is this in the us, or Texas?

Also if it was mg & it was never treated would the symptoms keep re occurring? Is it more likely this is just a uti?

Welcome back, but sorry you found it necessary.

You continue to overreact.  Women get UTIs all the time; there is no reason to suspect that your partner's symptoms have anything to do with your recent sexual encounter. As we discussed last time, you've been tested and negative. We also discussed that your own symptoms are typical for genitally focused anxiety. No STD, including Mycoplasma genitalium, is known to cause symptoms like yours. And if I correctly recall from your previous question, you've had tests showing normal urine, and you've had no symptoms of urethritis like discharge from the penis; a few drops of urine dripping after urinating of course is normal in most men from time to time (and in some men all the time).

If your partner's symptoms or your own continue to be bothersome, of course you should see your doctor(s) for further evaluation. But I'm confident no STD is responsible.

Yes you recall correctly, I’ve had 2 or 3 urinalysis that came back clear according to my doctor. If it was MG would it show anything on a urinalysis tho, If so would it be something my normal doc would catch.I understand I’ve had negative std test but I was never tested for MG, also has anyone ever had urethritis or any urethra infection  without showing discharge or is it always present.  Last question is would any std including MG Keep causing issues like uti symptoms coming back every few months in women?

how common is MG? I keep reading online that it’s one of the most common stds out there but that’s always what the internet says about EVERY std so it’s a little misleading & scary that is why I’m coming to this forum to help clear some of the mis information up.
I understand my one time encounter is unlikely to catch MG but my weird symptoms of penis discomfort. Random pains in the penis & testicle, tailbone pain & back pain  just worry me. My normal doc doesn’t think it has anything to do with std based on my negative tests. I do understand it most likely is focused anxiety because once the uti symptoms popped up again for her I almost felt like My symptoms were worse.

M genitalium is fairly common, but it's also relatively "new" in terms of medical knowlege. Testing for it, even in resarch settings, is fairly recent, so knowledge is still developing. However, we know it doesn't cause any symptoms different than those of chlamydia or gonorrhea. It certainly cannot cause the various symptoms you describe. Stay away from non scientific websites; limit your online searching to professionally run or moderatred resources. Testimony by patients who describe various symptoms are generally unreliable. There is no point in you being tested for it, in my professional opinion. If you decide to be tested, you can expect a negative result; and if positive, it will not explain your symptoms. (Most people carrying M gen have no symptoms at all, and usually it is harmless anyway.)---

Thank you for the updated information Dr. Handsfield I was unaware that it mostly is harmless. Final question is if MG was present would anything show abnormal on a urinalysis? WBC etc? I know it’s still fairly new and not well understood but I was hoping maybe you’d have some knowledge on that.  Thank you for all your help!

Any STD in the urinary tract -- which almost always means the urethra -- would usually result in an abnormal urinalysis, i.e. white blood cells either by microscopic exam or leukocyte esterase dipstick (either of which is routine with urinalysis in virtually all lab). Ideally, WBC analysis or leukocyte esterase especially when testing a first-void specimen, i.e. the first ounce of voided urine. With three normal urinalyses, especially if one or more was done on a first void specimen, you can be confident you not have M genitalium.

That completes the two follow-up exchanges included with each question and so ends this thread. Please note that repeat questions on the same topic are not permitted on the firum, so this is your last on these issues; repeated questions are at risk for deletion without reply (and without refund of the posting fee). We have found that repeated questions often prolong anxiety rather than relieving it, and such questions also have low educational value for other users -- one of the forum's main goals. Thanks for your understanding. I do hope the two discussion have been helpful. Best wishes and stay safe.
