[Question #6867] Herpes

Hello, abt 2 yrs ago I had a cold and I got dry skin on my nose ...I peeled it before it was ready to come off and ended up with a swollen scab ,before that healed I peeled it again and got another scab ...both were a bit oozy and tingly ..at the time same time I had dry skin on my lips which I peeled also and then repealed before it was ready and I ended up with 3 sore spots with the same feeling and oozy I didn’t think it was anything until I developed those spots ...then I started to wonder if it cld be herpes.Recently I had the same thing happen with my nose again when I had a cold .Still questioned if it cld be herpes. The other day my husband developed a similar thing on his bottom lip where it was dry And he picked at it and got a sore but then on his top lip he got another spot where it turned whitish so we immediately thought herpes ..he bought abreva and now it looks way smaller and not white maybe like a dried up blister ...almost gone ...both were there and almost gone in less then a week .He said he never had an outbreak but at 2o years he had a small tingly spot on his lip .Im a bit freaked out for a few reasons ,not sure if u can say if this sounds like herpes or not? I’d like to know if it can be spread by sharing the same cream ? When that happened 2years ago I had a tub of Shea butter thst I used on my face and  on my 3 year old on her whole body and face ..my husband also used .Before the lip sores I was using it on my nose when I didn’t think twice abt it being something else .Im not sure if herpes can be spread this way? Can you tell me ? My daughter had a small chafing rash on her butt and vagina  a few weeks after that with one little tiny pimple near her butt..it wasn’t an out of the ordinary rash but of course made me wonder...does that sound like it could be herpes ? Can you please advise me going forward  how this spread if it is herpes so I don’t pass it to my daughter if it is .If I touched it and touched her face would I give it to her ...

I would say that this sounds like it could be herpes, but not certain at all.  When things open up again a bit, you could certainly get an antibody test to see if you might have HSV 1 cold sores (half the population has this in the US) but for now, it's uncertain.  But I don't believe at all that you transmitted this to your daughter.
If this IS herpes, which we don't know, I would simply advise that you don't kiss your daughter on the lips when you have the symptoms listed above, if they recur.  People overestimate how easily transmission of herpes can occur.
In summary, we don't know if you have this, we don't know if your husband has this and I do know that you didn't transmit this to your child through a cream.
Let me know what other questions you may have, ok?

The IgG test for HSV 1 misses 30% of infections, compared to the gold standard western blot but you could start with the IgG test, certainly, and if positive, that's your answer.  Your primary doctor can order this for you OR you can order it yourself online at many services.  They will send you to a big lab like Quest or LabCorp for the test itself.  I've not been happy with results from the home testing, sorry.

Can my doctor order the western blot test for me ? You say the igg test misses 30% of infections?will it give A false positive?  Do u think it’s worth it to do ?i feel like if its negative then I’ll just worry it wasn’t accurate. And just for reassurance ... no need to worry about spreading this ( if we have it ) to my daughter by any other way then kissing her on the mouth while We have symptoms  ?

Yes, your doctor can order this for you but your doctor would have to work with the University of Washington to get the special kit required.  The number to call is 206-685-6066.  This is not a test that one could get from Quest or LabCorp.  It's a very specialized test requiring manual reading by three experienced virologist.
The IgG can also give false positives, yes.
You could have to have direct contact with your daughter's lips to transfer HSV 1 to her.  The only other things I discourage, though we have no evidence would transmit virus, it sharing towels and lipsticks.
