[Question #6925] Oral Gonorrhea Testing Years Later?

Hello Doctors,

I am a bisexual male, now in a relationship with a female.  My last experience in giving fellatio was between 4-5 years ago.  I have never been tested with a throat swab for gonorrhea.  I’ve been tested multiple times for genital infection via urine tests, always negative.  Does it make any sense to get a throat swab done now, 5 years later?  I have no reason to think I’m infected-I just never knew getting a throat swab was something I should’ve been asking for during my checkups.  I’ve never engaged in anal sex, so no worries there.

Thank you!

Welcome back to the forum. Thank you for this addtional question.

Gonorrhea is cleared by the immune system in a few weeks to sometimes a few months. In fact, throat (oral) gonorrhea probably is cleared sooner than most genital or rectal infections. There is no chance you still have oral gonorrhea from an exposure that long ago. No worries and bno need for testing.

I hope this is helpful. Let me know if anything isn't clear.

Thank you, Dr. Handsfield.  This is very helpful.  I will not pursue any additional testing relating to that past exposure.  No additional follow up questions from me.
