[Question #6990] GSV1 transmission from Hand

Hello Doctors,

I am looking for closure on a question that’s been on my mind the past 5 years and I haven’t gotten a satisfactory medical answer from my GP or have been able to find an answer to this online. Thank you in advance for your medical expertise and taking the time to answer this question:

I was diagnosed and have been living with Genital HSV 1 for over 5 years now. I’ve been on suppressive therapy (1 Valtrex a day) for 5 years to protect my partners. Haven’t had a noticeable outbreak since my 1st one 5 years ago and to this date my partners don’t seem to have contacted it from me.

If my partner touches my genitals (finger in vagina) and then touches themselves on their genitals (penis) by rubbing/jacking off themself,  can this be a mode of transmission? Should I tell them not to touch me or wash their hands after they touch me or wear gloves? I’ve had many conflicting answers and don’t know how to ease the worry in my mind of this being a mode of transmission.

This is not a reasonable mode of transmission.  virus is lost in the transmission and the environment also takes away virus viability.  No herpes or STD expert thinks that this is a method of transmission.  In addition, HSV 1 is rarely shed from the genital tract, certainly five years after infection.  And you add Valtrex, the likelihood that you would infect someone is just incredibly low.  Also, since about half the population already has HSV 1, they are not vulnerable to new infection from you.
