[Question #7085] Constant Herpes

Hi,
I had an oral unprotected encounter recently and for the last 4 months my penis glans have been irritated. They are red and blotchy which comes and goes and some redness around the meatus from time to time. When my penis is erect the glans become red and bumpy and dry. This never happened before the encounter. I also have some issues with loose stools and pain in my anus, frequent need to urinate, itching scrotum and slight mild pain in the top of penis. I have had most sti tests in the U.K. and so far all are negative. I have not had blood tests for herpes as not regularly tested for unless sores. My question is, does herpes show in such ways, as in there would be permanent symptoms that do not disappear and would be irritated when erect.

The symptoms that you describe do not sound herpetic to me. I am assuming when you say that you've had an unprotected oral sex encounter, you mean that you received oral sex, not gave it, right? Oral sex is not a good mechanism for transmitting sexually transmitted infections though it can happen. If you acquired herpes from this encounter, it would most likely be HSV 1, the common cause of cold sores, not HSV 2. But your symptoms sound nothing at all like herpes symptoms. And if you have ever in your life had a cold sore on your lip, you would be extremely unlikely to acquire this genitally anyway.

Hi Terri, thank you for the reply.
Sorry you are correct this was receipt of oral sex and kissing with a SW in the U.K.
Something has definitely happened since I had this experience, the main issues or the red rash that comes and goes when flaccid and very slight pain by the top and connecting cord to penis. Also how red and pimply my penis goes when erect. I need to pee a lot more now, this happened almost instantaneously after the encounter, well the next day. So don’t know if this would indicate some trauma?
I have seen a number of doctors and they don’t seem to know or care what it is, as like I said I have done most tests and so far negative. This is why I think it could be HSV or HPV related as not tested for in the U.K. I did have a urine test for HSV but not sure how accurate that would be.
I have been looking on the internet and in one chat site I came across the below comments regarding herpes:
The theory is that the HS virus lies dormant in the dorsal nerve of the penis causing an inflammatory response, more so with stimulation and blood flow.
Could this be true, apparently it crashes from a doctor but seems to contradict everyone else’s view on herpes which is generally dormant and goes in cycles?

Herpes indeed cycles from inactive to active and that probably happens quite often. I have never heard anything about having more blood flow causing more herpes symptoms.
If you are still really concerned about herpes, I have spoken with many people in the UK who were able to obtain IgG testing through private labs and I suspect you could do that if you searched around. but I will tell you that your symptoms sound nothing at all like herpes. I think you might consider seeing a dermatologist for a further evaluation

Hi Terri,
I have seen a number of doctors and visited sexual health clinics in the U.K. and they echo what you said, that it does not look or sound like Herpes as I have constant symptoms and no typical herpes presentations.
They weren’t really interested in speculating what it could be or helping further than that.
I am unsure whether to go for the full herpes test as it may not necessarily correlate to the current symptoms, as I could have quite easily picked up HSV 1 or 2 in the past with no symptoms. From my understanding The test won’t be able definitely say it’s genital or oral herpes just I have it in my system so might be none the wiser If it is that. I guess it’s up to me to decide.
I will try and seek referral to a dermatologist.
There are various chat forums with people experiencing similar symptoms and not sure what the underlying cause is.
Thank you for your input I just wanted to see if you or any of your colleagues had heard of such a scenario. I will keep searching as changed my life.

You are correct that a positive HSV 1 antibody test would not tell if you had oral or genital infection or both. A positive HSV 2 antibody test would tell you that you have genital herpes.
