[Question #7174] Herpes Concern

Hey there, some background on me
-haven’t had any sexual contact in 18 months
- have had sex under 50 times total in my life. usually condom protected. 10ish partners (most from highschool with people who hadn’t slept with anyone or, very few ppl.
- never noticed any classic symptoms (ulceration/blister)
-I’m 25

I woke up this morning after drinking a good amount last night, and noticed a small red patch of skin on my scrotum ( pretty small, but size of a dime when I stretch the skin out) it doesn’t hurt at all, isn’t tender, doesn’t itch, the skin isn’t broken, and there are no bumps/blisters.
I have pretty bad health anxiety so I went to the clinic and the doctor said it didn’t look suspicious to her and to just keep an eye on it, but said they had blood test available if I wanted to do it for my own worries (I told her I worry about things like this constantly) I took the blood test and it’s IGG, and am awaiting the results. I’m so nervous I can’t eat or sleep. The doctor told me she thinks it will be neg, but I can’t help but to worry. Can herpes present this way? I know it’s not an initial infection because it’s been so long since I’ve been sexually active but maybe I missed something before? I wouldn’t think so because I check myself pretty often.
Looking to have these concerns addressed/if you think I made the right choice in asking for the blood test. Thanks so much for your time and all you do

I would say it is EXTREMELY unlikely that herpes would present in this way AND that it would present on the scrotum only.
It's fine that you took the test but let me review the results when you get them, OK?  Remember that about 50% of the US Population has HSV 1 do you should not be surprised if that comes up positive, and that is particularly true if you have ever in your life had a cold sore on your lip.  You should be especially interested in your HSV 2 result.  About 6% of the time, someone will test positive in the low positive range (1.1 to 3.5).  About half of those positives are false positives and so that result, if you have obtained it, should be confirmed by a better test.  While you wait for test results, I would strongly encourage you to try not to worry. I'm guessing that this red area has zero to do with herpes.

Thanks for the reply Terri, I actually requested to only get the result for HSV2 .. I’ve never had a cold sore to my knowledge but I think the hsv1 result Would cause me more trouble than it’s worth. My doctor agreed with this assessment. I should’ve mentioned that in my first question, but yes, the hsv2 result is the only one I’m interested in. So without any other obvious past symptoms are you confident I’ll test negative? The waiting is absolute torture , but she said results only take a day or two.

Just got the phone call that
HSV 2 was negative.

Can I put this all behind me now? No exposures in 18 months

Yes!  You definitely can put this behind you.  If you ever want a copy of test results, you should know ahead of time that both HSV 1 and 2 are combined on the same result page.
