[Question #7278] HIV Testing Question

Hello,

I had a high risk exposure of anal sex recently and the condom broke.  I took a HIV RNA test at 10 days and 20 days post exposure, both were negative.  I also took a HIV 4th generation test at 41 days post exposure.  It was also negative.  Should I take more tests?  Are these results conclusive?

Welcome to the forum. Thanks for your question. It’s my pleasure to assure you that your testing when considered in Toto indicates that you were not infected with HIV. Most experts feel thar HIV RNA PCR testing is virtually conclusive 11 or more days following exposure. At the same time, the same experts suggest follow-up testing at 42 days six weeks following exposure to verify that infection has not occurred (I have never seen or heard of a patient with a negative PCR test at 11 days who went on to have a positive fourth generation test). There is no meaningful difference between test results at 41 and 42 days. Be confident that your test results prove that you were not HIV infected at the encounter you described above.

I hope this information is helpful. If there are further questions please feel free to use your up to two follow-up questions for clarification. EWH

Thank you for your timely response.  So just to be clear, you do not recommend anymore additional testing?

Correct. You should be entirely confident that you did not acquire HIV from the encounter you have described. Your tests prove this. EWH---

I actually told you wrong on the 4th generation test.  It was done at 40 days and 8 hours. Minimal difference, but I am just making sure that doesn’t change your valued opinion?

The difference in timing would make no difference.  Please don’t worry. EWH---
