Hello I was recently diagnosed with herpes 2. In 2017, I had an std blood test and it came back positive for only herpes type one the herpes 2 was negative. I am so upset about this. I have been in a monogamous relationship for 6 years and I know I took an STD test in 2015/2016 and was negative. I had my partner tested and he came back negative for herpes type 2 but has herpes 1. We have been faithful to one another and infidelity is not a factor. Can you tell me how it is possible I have this now? And my partner has not contracted this disease in 6 years? We did not use protection after we started dating. I am lost and confused. Thank you

Hold on. What was the index value associated with the test, and was it an IgG test?

Hi I’m not sure it is through labcorp though and they’re not available for me to see yet the one in 2017 was from quest and it said HSV 2 IGG Type specific AB <.90 in green. I have never had an outbreak too I just wanted to add

So let me see if I understand completely: You had a negative IgG test in 2015/2016 for both HSV 1 and 2. Then you had a partner who subsequently tested negative for HSV 2. Have you had a different partner since then?

I have had the same partner for the past 6 years we started dating in 2014 and I got tested 2015/2016 , 2017, and 2020. In 2020 (this month) I found out I was positive for both HSV1 and HSV2. My partner is only positive for HSV1 but negative for HSV2(this month).

Then something is very wrong here with the testing. It makes no sense to me. You could have contracted HSV 1 from your partner but not HSV 2. Can you please give me the index values associated with your testing now?

I feel the same way. I am going to see my gyno about this on Wednesday. The only thing I can think of is the 2015/2016 and then the 2017 tests were false negatives and I just had it all along. I used to get recurrent yeast infections but they have stopped maybe they could have been the outbreaks? These yeast infections were confirmed by tests though and I had no sores/blisters. I also have IBS And have had hemorrhoids but now I’m wondering if they were anal herpes. I have had many sigmoidoscopeies/colonoscopies and visual exams I’m not sure If GIs would see that. The values of my most recent test (11/3/2020)for HSV 1 IGG are 37.0 and then HSV 2 IGG 11.30. This test was ran by patient first (urgent care) through labcorp after
I found out and was in disbelief so I had to get tested by somewhere else. The other results from my gyno (10/30/2020) which I was told I had HSV 2 are not available until 11/12 but I guess they would be about the same. In 2017 the values were HSV 1 32.90 and HSV 2 <.90. I haven’t gotten my 2015/2016 records yet. My mom has had cold sores my whole life so I think it was from her. My boyfriend has never been tested for STDs up until I dragged him to patient first only to find out he is negative for HSV 2. I am going to ask to be put on meds I guess so I have a lower chance of passing it. We also bought condoms. I worry so much for the future and this guilt/shame is all consuming. I guess I just wish I knew how this happened now after so long. Sorry about all the fluff but I just had to her it all out.

Hi again so I had my doctors use quest instead of labcorp and the value is 11.50 so it looks like I definitely have this but no one can explain to my why or how or when or who and I can’t understand can you help me try to figure this out ? 6 years with one man never cheated and he’s negative and I had a negative test in the past never have had any symptoms so how can this be I have this ?

I'm telling you that this still doesn't make sense to me. A study that came out about 1.5 years ago found several people with high index values like yours who were actually not infected. The herpes western blot is expensive but I think it would give you a final answer on this. The IgG test can miss 8% of HSV 2 infections but with a negative partner? Just doesn't make sense. I would encourage you to investigate the blot to clarify your situation.

Do you know how much this test is and how I could obtain it? If it’s positive would I just have to accept that answer?

The cost depends upon how you get it. If you do it through me, I charge $350 - that includes the test itself, the consult with me, and the credit card fee associated with both. If you do it through your doctor and have insurance, the office visit fee might be eliminated but UW will not bill out of state insurance for this test. Additional costs include shipping and the blood draw. If positive, yes, that means you are infected and potentially infectious to others.
