[Question #7415] HIV accuracy

I had a one time exposure on December 28, 2019. No other exposures since. I tested 10 months after my exposure with a 4th generation HIV antigen/antibody  negative. And an HIV rna pcr test <20 copies not detected also after 10 months. My question is could you have a not detected RNA after 10 months and still have HIV or is HIV ruled out? With also having a negative 4th gen @ 10 months. I have swelling in belly last 3 months.

Welcome to our forum and thanks for your confidence in our service.  I can completely assure you that you did not acquire HIV from the exposure you describe above.  The testing you have had looked for the virus three different ways  at times when, if you had been infected, all would be positive.  The HIV RNA test looks for the virus RNA itself.  Most experts believe that these tests provide completely reliable results any time more than 11-14 days after an exposure and once positive they remain positive in untreated persons.   The 4th generation test looks for evidence of infection in two ways, looking for evidence that tan infected person is fighting the virus by looking for antibodies as well as looking for evidence of the virus itself by looking for viral antigens which are proteins made by the virus.  4th generation tests are entirely reliable in untreated persons at all times more than 6 weeks following an exposure.

You can be 100% sure that you were not infected in the encounter you describe.  There is no medical or scientific reason for further testing related to this encounter.

I hope this information is helpful.  EWH

I understand but does that mean my symptoms of swelling are not caused by HIV? Does it take a year too be conclusive?

Your test is negative.  If you had HIV, your test would be positive.  Therefore your swelling symptoms cannot be due to HIV because you do not have the infection.

HIV tests provide completely conclusive results at any time more than 6 weeks after an exposure.   .

Sorry for the delayed response.  EWH
