[Question #7446] Chances of spreading genital Hsv-1 while on valacyclovir

I am a female with genital hsv-1. I have been living with it for about 15 years. My last outbreak was over two years ago, and generally are not frequent. I take a lysine supplement, and have recently started taking 1G of valacyclovir daily (at the direction of my doctor).

Given the strain I have, my infrequency of my outbreaks, and the addition of suppression therapy - what is the likeliness that I will transmit to a partner?

It would be highly unusual for you to transmit HSV 1 to a partner through intercourse.  HSV 1 genital infection is rarely shed and rarely recurs, as you have experienced.
Also, about half the population between 14 and 49 already have HSV 1 infection which makes it very unlikely that someone would acquire this from you, genitally.  A person who has oral HSV 1 sheds virus far more often than someone with genital HSV 1 infection.  I would encourage you to explore relationships now, with courage!
