[Question #7522] Hiv concern

Thank you doctor ive tried to be good but i made mistake, had unprotected sex with a friend who ive known for many years she is a single white female we are in NYC age 35, as i was reaching for a condom she told me she was clean and i proceeded to have intercourse twice I am uncircumcised, my fear is she is very outgoing and has probably hooked up with decent number of men she also has many gay friends, and she had a few drinks in her. Ive known most people wouldn’t lie.

I am out of the 72 hr Pep window how worried should i be, i was thinking of waiting few more days and having a gono and chlymydia test first and would put my mind to ease until i can test for HIV within these 72 hrs i haven't had symptoms of yet. What are my odds and is 4-5 days safe for these tests
Thanks.

Welcome back to the forum. I’ll be glad to comment on your most recent exposure. Most people do not have STIs, including HIV.  The friend/partner you describe is known to you and has told you she is not infected although you don’t mention her basis for this statement. Further, even if she happened to be infected, most exposures to infected partners do not lead to infection. This was a low risk exposure. If you had approached me in my clinic requesting postexposure prophylaxis I would decline to prescribe it.

As far as testing to prove that you are not infected is concerned, testing for STI’s such as gonorrhea and chlamydia at 3 to 4 days following exposure will provide definitive, reliable results. In testing for HIV, at four weeks (28 days) test results will be more than 99% conclusive. Totally conclusive results will be available with testing at six weeks following the exposure.  In addition, the absence of symptoms at this time makes it still more unlikely that you were infected by the exposures you describe. If I were you I would not be the least bit worried.

I hope the information I have provided will help you not to not worry and allow you to move forward without concern. EWH

I understood that the sex was unprotected.  That in no way changes my opinion or advice.  EWH ---
