[Question #7538] MGEN test of cure

Hi Doc,

I was diagnosed with Mycoplasma Genitalium on Nov 26th. I immediately was prescribed a 10day course of Moxifloxacin. I finished that course on Dec 5th and decided to test on Dec 12th to see if the infection had cleared. That result came back negative. I read online that MGEN tests typically can come back with false negatives if you test too soon due to low bacteria loads in the urine and how slow the bacteria grows. I then waited until Jan 4th to test again and today my results came back negative again. At this point can I assume I have cleared the infection permanently now that it has been 30 days? Is there any chance the infection is still dormant or may recur in the next weeks or months? Do I need to have a third test in the future? I’m just trying to put this behind me

Welcome back to the forum. Thanks for sharing your test of cure follow up results. As Dr. Handsfield told you about a month ago the only way to be entirely sure that your therapy worked was to retest which you have now done twice. While our understanding of Mycoplasma genitalium is still evolving, the combination of having taking the currently recommended treatment regimen (an initial course of doxycycline followed by moxifloxacin) and your two negative tests are strong evidence that your infection is behind you.  30 days is certainly a long enough interval between completion of treatment and retesting to be confident that this is indicative that your infection has resolved.  At this juncture I would urge you to not worry further and to move forward.

I hope this assessment is comforting to you and will allow you to move forward without continuing concern. Hi certainly see no reason for additional testing. As you know, you have up to two follow-up questions if any part of my reply is unclear or further clarification is needed. Take care. EWH
