Hello Terri,

My partner told me she has genital herpes. We were seeing each other for about 2 months until she told me.  I told her it was okay but I still am kind of worried. I was wondering if you could clarify a few things for me.

1. What is the % chance that I would get it  from her if  she is on the daily suppressant? Condoms or no condoms.  ( I am a male)

2. If I perform oral sex on her what are the chances of contracting it orally?

Please let me know. Google says the worst and she told me to go on this website because I accidently keep making comments about it to her and I know it is upsetting her.

Do you know if she has HSV 1 or HSV 2?
If she has HSV 2, then with her taking daily antiviral medication and you using a condom, having sex about twice a week, on average, about 1-2 men out of 100 would get infected under those circumstances.  The risk of you acquiring this orally is very low but not zero.  HSV 2 doesn't like the oral are and if infection occurs there, it rarely recurs and essentially vaccinates someone against genital infection.
Have you been tested to know that you are not infected?
Do you know exactly how she was diagnosed?

Thank you for the reply!!!

She has HSV 2 and said she got a blood tested for it. She said she has had it since she was a young teen. She is 25 now.
No I have not been tested. I should get tested.
If 1 or 2 out of 100 men would get it with condoms.. Then without condoms I assume it is higher.
Do you know what those statistics are actually? Are there any statistics in this scenario? Use of no condoms?
(I know I should always use condoms) but still curious.

So the statistics that we do have about transmission are from couples studies where one has HSV 2 and the other doesn't.  So they've been together for a while before they enter a study.  You are talking about a brand new relationship so you'll probably have sex more than couples that have been together for a while, and that ups the risk, obviously.
Without condoms and without antiviral therapy, in our couples studies, the risk is around 4%.
About your partner:  The risk of getting HSV 2 as a teen is incredibly low.  If she was diagnosed only with a blood test, I would encourage her to look again at those results and be sure it was an IgG test and that the positive value was greater than 3.5.  If she has had recurring outbreaks since then, that's a different story
