Welcome to our Forum. Before I address your question, please let me remind you that we do our best to provide answers to clients within 24 hours of their posting. It is now 18 hours after you asked your question. Please be patient.
From your question, I presume that you have had sex on multiple occasions with the woman you were about to marry and that you only recently discovered that she had a positive test for HIV. Even before I address your question, I also wonder if her test was correct? Are you sure that she has HIV- did she have more than one test from a reliable laboratory that was confirmed? Some tests for HIV are falsely positive.
If she did have HIV and you have had sex with her, that does not mean that you would be infected. On average the risk for acquiring HIV is less than one infection for every 1000 exposures- thus the more you had sex with her, the more likely it is that you might have become infected. Further, I can tell you that I have many patients who have been sexually active with persons with HIV for more than two years and yet they have not become infected. Thus, it was possible and even likely, even before you were tested , that you would not have gotten HIV. Your combo test result 31 days after last sex is further VERY strong evidence that you were not infected and should be believed. You are one of the very few persons in who an additional test at 6 or even 8 weeks after last exposure might be suggested, just to be completely sure but, based on what you say above, I would anticipate that further tests will be negative, just affirming what you have already discovered- that you were not infected with HIV.
Thus, to summarize, my advice is:
1. To be completely sure that your partner really was HIV infected and that her prior test was not falsely positive, and
2. I would repeat your test once more but I would not worry that you were infected. all of the evidence is that you were not.
I hope this comment is helpful. EWH
