Hi doctor handsfield hope all is well my question is back in 2015 6 years back I had an exposure not knowing it was protected vaginal sex or not because I had few drinks and room was dark but according to the Chinese csw in Guangzhou she used a condom and threw the condom and the packaging into the toilet flush I Had doubt why did she do that but never thought of it anyways 3 weeks after that I had fever for 5 days went to the doctor and doctor did some test and found it it was mild typhoid parathype so he gave me antibiotics and 5 days later I was fine fever was ky only symptoms and 2 years later I developed a rash on my chest and stomach doctor said it was allergic not viral cause it went away in 4 days but now I started to developed recurring boils and my wife also keeps on puking in the morning also she had rash also few weeks after my exposure but on the thighs but no fever.
Well my question is do u think HIV is the concern is it common to just have fever as the only symptoms during ars and rash 2 years later also recurring boils few years later . It has been 6 years now would I developed serious symptoms if it was HIV without meds ?
Please doctor fo u think HIV is the cause the sex lasted only 10 seconds . Pls advice thanks doctor

Welcome to our forum. Thanks for your questions. Dr. Handsfield and I share the form and I will be answering your questions today. FYI Dr. Handsfield and I have worked together for over 30 years and while our verbal styles vary our recommendations do not.
The exposure you described was very low risk. Most commercial sex workers do not have HIV, a condom may have been used, and the statistical risk for acquiring HIV if your partner had untreated HIV is substantially less than 1 in 1000 (I.e. more than 99.9% of such exposures do not lead to infection). In addition, you have an alternate reason for your fever and the rash you describe does not suggest HIV. (The ARS is a combination of symptoms including high fever, servers sore throat, muscle or joint aches and occasionally diarrhea). The chance that you acquired HIV is infinitesimal. Although I would not worry about HIV, the only way to be absolutely sure is the have a test. That said, I am confident that should you choose to test, the result will show that you were not infected.
Hope that this helps. If there are further questions regarding this topic, please feel free to use your up to two follow up questions for clarification. EWH

As I said, the ARS is a syndrome with multiple symptoms and solitary fever is not considered ARS. The symptoms of the ARS typically occur simultaneously. Most typically it takes more than 5-6 years after infection to develop the severe illnesses that are characteristic of advanced HIV/AIDS.
Boils are not a sign of HIV. I am not sure where you heard that. If it was the Internet I must caution you that much of what is found there is incorrect, out of date, or taken out of context. EWH
