[Question #7838] Medications causing false negative IgG tests

Hello,

I recently posted a question regarding my symptoms and my negative PCR and multiple negative HSV type specific 1/2 IGG and IGM tests. It was recommended that I pursue a Western Blot due to my presentation and negative tests, but I had a quick question on that. I take spironolactone 100 mg once daily for acne. I have taken this for years and have been on it during all of my hsv testing. I’ve read that spironolactone actually is also an effective antiviral for EBV and HSV as well as multiple other viruses, demonstrated in in vivo studies. Does this mean that spironolactone would most likely work as an antiviral in people? Would the spironolactone  have impacted my tests despite having symptoms and would it impact the Western Blot, like Valtrex does? Have you noticed a pattern with increased false negatives with patients on spironolactone? I know this may be a tricky question. I just haven’t been able to find any studies on it for the past few years. I only ask because I’d hate to get off of it (it’s the only thing that has ever been helpful in controlling my sever acne), but I will if necessary to get accurate test results. Thank you very much for your help.

I don't believe that the spironolactone would influence your testing, no.  It is certainly not as impactful as one of the herpes specific antivirals.  I don't believe that you would need to get off of it for the western blot, no.  You will get an accurate blot while taking this medication.
