[Question #7887] Hiv test and biotin

Hey doc. So I’ve been having some worries about my hiv test results after learning that biotin may interfere and give a false negative. So I tested negative 2 weeks, 4 weeks, a little over 5 weeks, 45 days, and again recently at almost 10 weeks after exposure . They were all fourth gen ag/ab tests. I was ready to put it behind me until I read that biotin can interfere with test results. I didn’t think anything of it at first. But then I checked my multivitamin and it has 60 mcg of biotin in it. I didn’t take the supplement 24 hours before the most recent 10 weeks after exposure test. Do I need to test again and not take my multivitamin 72 hours before or am I good because it was a low dose.
Thanks doc.

Welcome back, but sorry you found it necessary.

Very large doses of biotin, with abnormally high blood levels, can interfere with the HIV AgAb (4th generation) tests. Even this is rare, and any potential interference is prevented by waiting a day or two to test after the last biotin dose. And the amount you took has absolutely no chance of interference anyway. Your test results all are valid.

Appreciate it doc. Since I generally eat a diet that could raise my biotin levels, should I get an rna test instead? At this point 11 weeks away from exposure, would the rna test be valid, or is the fourth gen better?

Diet cannot raise biotin levels to an amount that interferes with HVI testing.

Having been tested for HIV with negative result at 45 days, it is 100% certain you do not have HIV, regardless of your biotin intake or diet. You do not need any additional testing at 11 weeks or any other time. But if you decide to do it anyway, the AgAb (4th generation) test would be the better choice. But why go through the hassle or waste the money?
