Hello Docs I recently asked about steroids and 4th gen I was moving on after your response until I read the biotin interference I ran to see my vitamins and theres biotin 200mcg per pill, I am so worried, its been a while since I take those pills I got a negative insti test yesterday (11 months after exposure) and my 4th gen was done at 9 months after exposure( probably an hour or two I might took biotin I dont remember very well) Can biotin may be given me a false negative after 9 months? I Am so concerned again I cant believe it

Welcome back to our forum. On this occasion I happen to pick up your question. In preparing to reply I did review your earlier interaction with Dr. Handsfield and agree with all that he said. You are correct that it appears that person is taking high doses of vitamin supplements containing biotin can have an increased likelihood of a falsely negative test for HIV early in the course of the infection. To get the sort of blood levels required to affect HIV test results, the amount of biotin which is taken is typically greater than 1 mg or five times the dose of biotin found in the supplement you were taken. Further, this potential side effect, on those rare occasions when it does occur, tends to occur in persons with recently acquired HIV. Biotin levels in the blood drop quickly following ingestion and if you had not taken biotin for a day or two before your blood test you could have complete confidence in your test results.
Since you have not taken biotin for sometime your negative HIV test result should be believed. Like Dr. Handsfield, I see no reason for additional testing for HIV. Please don’t worry. E.WH

Thank you Doctor so
1.- I was taking it daily honestly I didnt know it could affect the test, I probably took it that day like 2 hours before the test
2.- so if it does affect is mainly with people that were recently infected so a 9 month test would still be accurate and adding that is has to be a high dose of 1mg or more per day?
3.- can I trust this last insti test then (no biotin at all)? Even if its a 3rd generation one and rapid test

Either you did not read my reply above or you are being repetitive. The biotin effect is rare and occurs in persons taking much higher doses than you were and disappears in just a day or two after you stop taking it. Therefore:
1. Unlikely to have an effect and certainly would not have an effect after you stopped.
2. Correct
3. Yes.

Thank you Doc for your patience I dont know why I cant accept my conclusive results, I know for a fact by 9 months any test would tell clearly if Im infected or not

Thank you for sharing your acknowledgment with us. I understand that sometimes guilt or anxiety over a misstep can cause one to worry unnecessarily. I hope my comments have been helpful to you. Please believe your results. Take care. EWH---

The last question is i have to do another test for work purposes which I know if I dont have more risks wont change its negative results BUT If I take an insti rapid test before that 4th gen again is a good preliminary of the result of the future 4th gen?

Sigh. Your result is conclusively negative. If you do not have further exposure, your test will stay that way.
End of thread. Further repetitive, anxiety-driven questions may be deleted without return of your posting fee. Please don’t worry. EWH
