[Question #7925] GHSV 1 and COVID Vaccine

I was diagnosed with GHSV1 3 years ago. I had the initial outbreak and haven’t had one since. I was looking to get vaccinated until I read that getting the vaccine activates your immune system and could trigger an outbreak. I know ghsv1 outbreak after 3 years is unlikely to occur but I also know that there’s a possibility for an oral outbreak. Do you know if this is true?

I know of absolutely no evidence for the COVID vaccine triggering an outbreak.  There was some discussion of the COVID vaccine triggering shingles in an Israeli study but I don't think that has been confirmed either.  Unfortunately, the word "herpes" was used when discussing this possible connection (shingles is caused by one of the viruses in the herpes virus family but not simplex) so people got worried.  I would definitely get vaccinated!

Thank you Terri.

Also, being that I contracted HSV1 through my genitals does that mean I could still have an oral outbreak? It’s been 3.5 years and only experience one sore on my genitals.

I don’t take any suppressants. I just maintain my immune system with vitamin C and D.

I think, at this point, since oral HSV  recurs more often than genital HSV 1, if you had contracted oral HSV 1, you would have had an outbreak.  That isn't a promise that you aren't infected orally but it seems unlikely

How effective is Lysine and  Monolaurin at suppressing outbreaks?

The research that's been done just doesn't support either of these, though I have had patients who report benefit from both.
