[Question #7998] HPV ongoing issue

Hi! I have been dealing with HPV (genital warts) for some time and have them treated with cryo. I recently had a bad outbreak and had them treated. They were causing me discomfort. I noticed that the most recent ones changed the texture of the skin, but the dermatologist found the bumps and froze it. My discomfort is dramatically better but my skin still looks distorted. I believe this may be partly due to scarring from the treatment, as it is on the head of the penis which I’ve found is more sensitive skin. My issue is that I’m paranoid about whether I still have a wart or not. I’ve always tried and refrained from sex while getting treatment but I did receive oral sex last night and now I feel terrible. I feel like I’m a pariah and I shouldn’t be having sex with anyone. I just don’t know what to do. I’m constantly looking for bumps and analyzing everything on my penis that might be a bump. Should I be this concerned or just take the proper precautions when having vaginal sex and try not to obsess?

Welcome to the forum. Thanks for your confidence in our services.
Unfortuantely, however, I can't help very much. Only direct examination by a qualified health care provider -- i.e. one highly experienced in genital warts, such as a dermatologist -- can distinguish between persistent warts versus scarring or other skin changes reulated to HPV or its treatment. And even such an expert might need to recommend biopsy to know for sure. If you're not confident in your dermatologist's experience and expertise in HPV and warts, you should consider a second opinion.
I will say that I doubt your discomfort is due directly to HPV or warts. HPV alnost never causes pain or symptoms of irritation -- seems to me this is more likely the result of treatment, not due to HPV per se. As for feeling like a "pariah", the best solution probably is to be reassured you no longer have active warts or HPV -- which I suspect will be the outcome after you have been carefully reevaluated.
Sorry I can't give you the full reassurance you probably were hoping for. But I hope these comments are helpful. Let me know if anything isn't clear.

Thank you I am going to go for a second opinion. The discomfort is a burning or “heat” sensation that sometimes starts and stops and sometimes lasts a little while and then will go away. I never experienced it except when getting cryo treatment. But it doesn’t seem to be going away. I suspect it is the treatment bc the pain is in the same area but does this sound like it could be anything else to you?

Thanks for the thanks. A side effect of treatment is by far the most likely explanation.
I'll be interested ih the outcome after you've had that second opinion. I suggest you hold off on new questions until then, since threads are closed after two follow-up exchanges.
