[Question #8031] STD from oral sex

Hi Dr.
7 days ago I visited a massage parlor in Southern California. A young Asian lady was performing a hand job and spit in my penis like 3 times. Right before I was about to finish she inserted my penis in her mouth (unprotected) for like 5-10 seconds right when I was ejaculating. I am circumcised and healthy.
Up until today I have no symptoms or signs of anything unusual.
I know the risk of HIV is practically 0, but based on this short description would like to know your take on possible STDs. Should I be concerned?
Thanks a lot!

Welcome to our foreman thanks for your confidence in our service. I’ll be glad to comment. The bottom line is that your risk for having acquired a STIs is very low.. Both tthe nature of your exposure and the brevity of your receipt of oral sex combine to make your risk for infection close to zero.
Your risk for having aquired HIV from the exposure you to describe is effectively zero. There has never been a case of HIV which has been proven to have been acquired through receipt of oral sex. As far as other STI’s are concerned, the most common STI acquired through receipt of oral sex is gonorrhea and while this certainly occurs, it is not all that common in situations such as yours. In your case your short exposure reduces your risk to below average. Further, when persons acquire Gonorrhea, about 90% of those persons develop symptoms (urethral discharge and burning on urination) within 3 to 5 days following exposure so the absence of any symptoms now, a week later, again makes it unlikely that you acquired any STI. Should you wish to be entirely confident did you did not acquire gonorrhea, a urine test at this time would be entirely conclusive. If you choose to test (I probably would not), I anticipate the result will be negative.
I hope this information is helpful to you. If anything is unclear or further clarification is needed, please feel free to use your up to two follow up opportunities for that purpose. Please don’t worry. EWH

Thanks a lot, Doctor.
Your response was very helpful and much appreciated.
I followed your advice (even if you said you wouldn’t do it), and got the full STD check that same day. Results came in all negative except the HSV 1 IgG, with 62.2; however, I have never had an occurrence. This result is very common and nothing I should worry about. Correct?
Again, thanks a lot for your help and guidance.

Correct. About 80% of persons who have HSV-1 are unaware of their infections and are detected only with blood tests. If you do not have active lesions of recurrences, I would not be worried about this. Many persons who have test results such as you have acquired HSV-1 during childhood and never have had a recurrence and are not a risk for persons they may have contact with. EWH---
