[Question #8065] Acyclovir pre-exposure prophylaxis for HSV-2

Dear Sir/Madam
I’m sure that you’re familiar with on-demand pre-exposure prophylaxis with Truvada for HIV infection prevention.
The 2-1-1 protocol.
Do you have any information/experience with using acyclovir for on-demand pre-exposure prophylaxis to HSV-2 ?
That is, the uninfected partner of an HSV-2 patient using on-demand pre-exposure prophylaxis with acyclovir for a day or two prior/a day or two after a sexual contact ?
Thank you!

We have no evidence that an uninfected person would benefit from taking acyclovir prior to a sexual encounter with an infected person. In fact, the dose to prevent latency would likely to be quite high. I'm not saying it might not work, but we did look at that years ago and didn't find a benefit though I don't believe the study was extensive. Probably way better for the infected person to take suppression, and begin at least five days prior to any sexual contact with an uninfected person to be most successful.
