[Question #8070] Menstrual Blood STDs Risks

Hello Doctor,
Thank you for taking the time to answer my question.
I have had a sexual encounter with a Russian CSW in France. The girl is very healthy and looks so. She also says she practices safe sex always and is concerned about her well being more than her clients. The encounter wasn't long, she performed protected oral for me, then we proceeded to vagina intercourse, protected of course, which lasted around 10 min. After I finished and checked the condom, it has streaks of blood, looked like two areas of blood, it wasn't that much and was on the upper half of the condom. That was the moment of concern, she comforted me not to worry as she is very healthy. However, I'm here to hear your professional opinion. Assuming that the blood reached the bottom of the condom and seeping on my skin, and that I might have had contact with my hands in which I have some nicked nails and cuts around the nails, just the normal obsessive cuts from picking nails with the mouth. Should I be worried about STDs including HIV? Do I need to test. I test usually every year as a part of a full health checkup.
Thank you again and sorry for the long paragraph.

Welcome to our forum and thanks for your question. I’ll be glad to provide some information.
I see no reason for concern related to the appearance of menstrual blood on the outside of your condoms. In untreated persons who are infected with HIV, the amount of virus present in blood is about the same as the amount of virus present in genital secretions. Thus the presence of blood on the outside of the condoms you used makes no difference in your risk whatsoever and requires no special precautions. As long as condoms were worn throughout the entirety of your penetrative encounters (both oral and genital) you are at no meaningful risk for HIV or other STI’s and I see no reason for special testing before your routine annual tests.
---I congratulate you on your approach to safe sex. I am confident it will keep you safe. Take care. EWH
