[Question #8117] HIV concern with Mutual Masturbation/exchange of fluids.

Hello,

Thank you for your time. I recently engaged in mutual masturbation with a stranger in a steam room. We were sitting next to each other and when he ejaculated some of his semen got onto my penis as well as my hand. When I left the steam room I tried to clean myself with the towel and that is when I noticed his semen was also on the towel, and that I had wiped the semen onto my penis as well as some on my eye.

My concern is that I am uncircumcised and worry that his semen got inside my foreskin. Also the potential for wiping his semen on my eye.

The exposure was 7 days ago and I have become extremely dizzy with a throbbing headache.

Was I at risk for HIV?

Thank you again.

Welcome to our Forum and thanks for your question.  I'll be glad to comment. The exposure you describe did NOT put you at risk for HIV or other STIs.  In addition to the fact that most persons do not have HIV, there are several reasons that this is the case.  They include:

1.  When infected genital secretions get onto cloth/material, bacteria and viruses tend to stick to the fibers of the material and not be transmitted.
2.  HIV and other STIs must be transmitted DIRECTLY and are not transmitted through transfer from one person's genitals to another person on hands or inanimate objects.
3.  Even mutual masturbation, without penetration, is categorized as a NO RISK exposure, even when partners get each others' genital secretions on one another.  HIV has never been transmitted through contact of the sort you describe with genital secretions.

I hope that this information is helpful.  I see no reason for concern or even for testing.  If there are further questions or clarification is needed, please use your up to 2 follow-ups for clarification.  EWH

Hello Doctor,

Thank you for your quick response. I guess my only follow up would be just to confirm that semen potentially getting under my foreskin would not change your answer.

Thanks again. I really appreciate what you and the other Doctors do here!

Correct, even with semen getting under your foreskin would in no way change my assessment.

I'm glad my comments have been helpful.  EWH

Hello Doctor,

Thank you again as our answers have really put me at ease. Since I still have 1 question I guess I might as well ask:

Towel aside, would masturbating or touching my penis with either his semen that was on my penis or his semen  that was on my hand make a difference at all in addition with my being uncircumcised?

Thank you again, and sorry if I am being repetitive!
Enjoy your weekend if you get one!

I understand your anxiety however, the fact is that there are no scientific data to suggest that there was ANY risk for STI from the encounters you describe.  Whether or not his genital secretions may have gotten under your foreskin makes no difference.  Still no risk.  Take care. EWH---
