[Question #8158] Flat Warts/HPV

I’ve flat warts on hands and top of feet/ankle. I’m confused as to if these are dangerous and related to cancer or genital warts. I’ve had these for a very long time at least in hands. Can you help me understand if these are dangerous or life threatening?

Welcome to our forum and thanks for your question. I’ll be glad to clarify this issue. There are over 100 different types of HPV. Different types infect different parts of the body. The types which cause genital warts and on rare occasions progress to cause genital track cancer are different from the types which cause flat warts occurring on the hands and feet.  The type of HPV that cause flat warts occurring on the hands and feet can be a nuisance and occasionally, can be uncomfortable, but are different from the types of HPV that cause genital warts and are not a meaningful risk for cancer.

I hope this is helpful and clarifies things.  If there are further questions or additional clarification is needed please feel free to use your up to two follow ups. EWH

Thanks doctor. So basically you’re saying that they aren’t a cancer risk in any way? Just kinda scared if that makes sense. I’ve had some of these for many years is that ok?

Correct. They are not associated with cancer risk. If they begin to crack or otherwise cause you discomfort, you should do something about them. EWH ---
