I was with someone for years 6 that had HSV-(gential) . We never did anything when she had an episode and she took daily meds. I have never had an symptoms or issues. Should I be tested. I also had oral sex with someone should I be concerned with them. I received they gave. I’m a male.

Just wanted to follow up on the below questions and clarify. There was oral disgusting. Not sure if that changes the risk factor for the new partner. I look forward to reading your responses. Thanks

So sorry I missed this. so if since you were with someone who had genital herpes, it would be reasonable to get an IgG antibody test, yes

Whoops, pushed the button before I was finished.
Have you ever in your life had a cold sore on your lip or in your nose? If yes, then your antibody test is going to be positive for HSV 1. If not, and you get a positive HSV 1 result, your infection could be oral or genital, we can't know. The risk with receiving oral sex is really HSV 1, not HSV 2, while the female partner risk is HSV 2. the best antibody test is the herpes western blot, but you could start with the IgG test which is far more readily available. But if you want the western blot, I can help you with that. They are only done at the University of Washington.
Also, if you do do the IgG test and you get a vaue of less then 3.5 and a positive, that result should be confirmed by a second test. If you want to do the IgG test and post your results here, I would be happy to help you understand them better.

Just to understand. If a female gives oral sex the Risk to them is hsv 1? If I happen to have hsv 2 they would not be at risk? I have never had anytime or cold sure I’m aware of.

No, if a female gives oral sex to you, the risk to her would be HSV 2 IF you have HSV 2. If a female gives oral sex to you and you don't have HSV 2, there is no risk to her. If you give oral sex to a female that has HSV 2 genital infection, the risk to you is HSV 2 oral infection. If a female with HSV 1 gives oral sex to you, then the risk to you is HSV 1.
Its complicated, I know! But let me know if I'm not fully answering your question here, OK?

That makes sense. I have read that oral transmission of hsv-2 is extremely rare and in most cases unlikely. Is that accurate? If someone is to acquire hsv either 1 or 2 in most cases would you know in the first few months after exposure?

If I get a test, how would I know if it’s genital or oral if for some reason it comes back positive? Thanks

It is accurate that HSV 2 is uncommon. Have I seen it? Absolutely
The problem is that 80% of those infected don't know it. Either they don't have symptoms OR they don't recognize that the symptoms are due to herpes.
If you came back positive for HSV 2 on the IgG test, with 95% certainty, you would know that it is genital.
If you come back positive for HSV 1 and have no history of cold sores, you could not know if your infection was oral or genital unless you had a symptom that could be swab tested for HSV
