[Question #8160] STI Symptoms

Last sexual exposure was oral and it was over 9 weeks ago. In the last 48 hours I have developed painful urination with weak stream and feeling like I need to urinate often. This is much worse at night. . No discharge but went to urgent care and they said there were white blood cells in my urine so there's an infection. I have had very little ejaculation is the past 8 weeks and I have usually been very sexually active. Would a STI from 9 weeks ago just start to show symptoms now or is this most likely a UTI or Prostatitis. I know that UTI in men are not common. I just can't believe that if I was exposed through oral which is low risk, that this would be showing symptoms now so far down the road. Please ease my mind?

Welcome to our forum and thanks for your question. I’ll be glad to comment. Most typically the signs of urethral STI’s have their onset between three and 10 days following an exposure. To experience the onset of symptoms nine weeks following an exposure would be most unusual. Further, the onset of STI’s following receipt of oral sex is less common than following genital exposure to an infected partner. The most typical symptoms are the presence of burning on urination and/or a visible urethral discharge. Urinary frequency is not a typical sign of a huge of a STI and is more suggestive of a urinary tract infection, including prostatitis as you mention.
As you suggest, I would be more concerned about the possibility of prostatitis or another type of urinary tract infection than an STI in your situation. I hope these comments are helpful. If any of this reply is unclear or there are further questions please feel free to use you were up to two follow-ups for clarification. EWH

Good morning Dr. Hook. I do have some burning and discomfort when urinating and that just started in the past 24hrs. This is mostly very little urine coming out feeling like my urethra is obstructed. I don't see any visible discharge. I just had to ask because it just wouldn't make any sense to have a possible infection not have any symptoms until now. So you feel I can confidently move away from an STI?

In science and medicine one can never say never however all that you described makes it most unlikely that the symptoms you describe are due to an STI. Obviously, there is no harm in testing for STI ( gonorrhea and Chlamydia)and if you choose to do so, I am confident that the test will be negative. EWH---

I have also have diarreah for 10 or so days and under a great deal of stress right now. So just want to make sure that is not a symptom of Chlamydia or Gonorreah

No, diarrhea is not a sign of gonorrhea or chlamydia infection. On the other hand, it could be a manifestation of anxiety. EWH ---
