[Question #8202] HIV & STD Risk

Friday night went to strip club in Texas and received blowjob from stripper with condom.   What are my risks for HIV and other STDs?   When should I get tested?

Welcome to our forum. Thanks question.

The exposure you described was very very low risk. Few STI’s are acquired through receipt of oral sex and condoms, when used throughout the encounter, virtually illuminate the risk. As long as you’re condom was worn throughout your exposure I would have no concerns and would feel no need for testing. I hope this information is helpful. EWH

Thank you very clear and helpful.    For my reference if I do have a “risky” exposure (I always use condoms, so I guess that would mean if one breaks)  in the future, what would be your testing recommendation(s).

Good question.  If you use condoms correctly ( throughout the entire encounter) and consistently, I would still test for the most common STIS (Gonorrhea, chlamydia and while rarer, Syphilis and HIV once every 6-12 months, depending on how many encounters and your sense of risk. EWH ---

Thanks Dr. Hook. Was reading the forum some more, tried to summarize what I think is in there.  Is anything below incorrect/need clarification?   Will be my last question.   Thanks again!

Unprotected regular/anal sex warrants HIV/STD testing even if low risk encounter, unprotected oral likely doesn’t for HIV, and definitely not if condom is used.   HIV tests are reliable at 4-6 weeks (4th generation).  Same for syphilis.  Other common STI accurate at 1-2 weeks, likely will show symptoms if acquired.

Thanks.   Your summary is correct with one exception- receipt of unprotected oral sex is effectively no risk.  There are no proven cases of HIV acquired from receipt of oral sex.

As you point out, this response will complete this thread.  Take care, stay safe. EWH
