[Question #8214] Oral Sex and How to determine bumps on buttox

Hello, I was diagnosed with genital herpes back in 2018 and I still am traumatized by it. I'm always wondering is this a herpes lesion? I'm always looking on the internet to see if my bump matches theirs. The question I have is how do I know when I can recieve oral sex from a man? I have not had no more than 2 breakouts since I had it that I have seen on the outside. How do I know if I am contagious? I am currently on a suppressive therapy valtrex. Does herpes on the genitals look the same on your butt?

Do you know if you have HSV 1 or HSV 2 genital infection? They are very different diseases in the genital tract. If you have only had two outbreaks since 2018, there is a reasonable chance that this is HSV 1 if you don't know the type. Also, even if you have HSV 2, two outbreaks in three years is pretty minimal.
There is simply no way to know for sure when you are shedding virus but suppressive therapy reduces that by about 70%.
Herpes on the labia looks different than herpes on the buttocks. Buttocks herpes is more significant as the lesions are breaking through really tough skin to get to the surface. They last longer, they can be quite painful and begin as swelling beneath the skin that then forms a blister, then breaks through and ulcerates and then scabs. The outbreak cn take 2-3 weeks to heal.
In terms of receiving oral sex: it would be helpful for me to know the type you have (HSV 1 or 2) before answering.

Hello, Terri. Thanks for your response. I was diagnosed with HSV2 by my ob/gyn. They did a culture swab test. I have not had many sex partners so by me getting this has really made my confidence levels sink. I want to let my ex give me oral sexbut I do not want to infect him. I have given him oral sex on many occasions. There is so much conflicting information on the internet. I guess there is no way to be completely sure. My doctor told me to not be afraid of transmitting it but I want be for sure. Some sources say that I can give it to him orally and some don't. The bump that was on my but looked like a small pimple not like a lesion it went

The lesions on your bottom does not sound like herpes.
Does your ex also have HSV 2? If yes, then it is a non-issue.
Are you taking daily antiviral medicine? If not, you should consider this as it reduces transmission by almost half - a very effective method of reducing transmission.
Does he know about your HSV?

Hey, Terri. I do take suppressive therapy meds. I take it everyday. I just wonder about transmission because there were times when we did extacy. I did not know if that makes the suppressive therapy less potent. We always use protection. I just want to be safe and know the risks. I'm thankful for this informative posts.

that's great that you are being so proactive about protection. Good job! I'm not aware of ecstasy having any interaction with the herpes medication at all. I think you are good in that respect.
