[Question #8219] Unprotected and testing

|
Have a regular partner whose tested and regularly donates blood . Had sex a few days ago started with protection but ended up unprotected for less about 5-10 min She is single white eastern european female 30s goes out alot says she was tested a year ago.
I took a aptima gon and chlymydia test about 40 hours after sex using first void and no urination in the past hour. Results were negative how conclusive would this be since it was a tad early i figure about 80-90% . Should i be overly concerned with this what are my odds im concerned about std/hiv here
Thank you

If I correctly understand, you've had sex with a new partner. Your very brief description suggests she could be at high risk for having an active STI. However, even in that situation, most people are not infected, and most STIs are not transmitted very efficiently. But probably you were at some risk. Your negative test at 40 hours is somewhat reassuring, but may have been done too soon. Your guess at 80-90% reliability probably is OK for gonorrhea, but many chlamydial infections might be missed. You should consider retesting after 4-5 days, which would be conclusive. Heterosexually transmitted HIV and syphilis are rare after any single exposure, probably well under one chance in many thousand -- but for conclusive results for both you would need blood tests at 6 weeks. Alternatively, if you are still in touch with that partner, you could ask her to be tested: if negative, you'll know you could not have been infected. If that doesn't happen, of course be on the lookout for suspicious symptoms and get checked immediately if anything shows up (penile discharge, painful urination, penile sores or blisters, etc).
I hope these comments are helpful. Let me know if anything isn't clear.

Trichomonas testing is not normally recommended or necessary in asymptomatic men. You can expect a negative result, however.
Syphilis and HIV testing are routine in anyone tested for any STI, and on that basis it makes sense for you to be tested. However, the chance of either infection in this setting is exceedingly low and if somehow I were in your situation, I would continue unprotected sex with my wife without the slightest concern about infecting her.

No, a syphilis rash would never be anything like this. The large majority of rashes or other skin problems of the genitals are not due to any STI.
That completes the two follow-up exchanges included with each question and so ends this thread. I hope the discussion has been helpful.
