[Question #8339] Hsv 1 Pregnant

|
Hello well I’m currently six weeks pregnant and find out I have hsv 1 genitally 5 years ago. I was taking valvacory probably spelled it wrong but 500mg daily for suppressive therapy. Stoped when I found out I’m pregnant. I rarely get outbreaks. So my question is should I be worried I be worried about my baby getting it from me? Can I start backing taking suppressive therapy or wait till I get farther along. Also my partner says he don’t have hsv 1 even though he is 30 n multiple partners.

Have you made your obstetric provider know that you have genital HSV 1 infection? If not, you should, and they will likely place you on higher doses of suppression at the end of your pregnancy to try to prevent an outbreak at the time of delivery that would require a c-section. Because HSV 1 is usually pretty quiet in the genital area, this should be a minimal problem, but you definitely need to notify your provider about this.

I will tell her, but my question is more of I was reading about how the baby would get antibodies from me while I’m pregnant because I have had the infection for so long that it’s not really a major concern. That’s what I would like more information about from u. As I’m trying to gain knowledge of this matter

I would agree for sure that it is not a major concern. And yes, you will pass antibody to your baby later in your pregnancy that will definitely reduce the risk of the baby acquiring HSV 1. Babies who acquire HSV 1 (and this is rare) get less sick than babies who acquire HSV 2.
But I doubt seriously that either will happen to you if you notify your provider of your condition and you take relatively higher doses of antiviral medication during that last month or so of your pregnancy.
Neonatal herpes is NOT common and most often happens when a mother acquires HSV 2 in the third trimester of her pregnancy. None of this applies to you, right?
