[Question #8367] Possible std risk

Hello Doctors,
Thank you so much for creating this service. Okay so this past Friday I went to a strip club and got very drunk, a couple things happens that have me very worried that I contracted an std. so what happened was while I was getting a private dance from a worker she put her hands down my pants and touched my penis with her bare hand and squeezed it a little while I had an erection. We also had a deep kiss for about a minute. Yesterday I noticed my tounge felt weird kind like it had a cancker sore or the feeling you get when you eat too much candy. I didn’t noticed any actual sores in my mouth but my younger does feel weird almost like I burned it. I did an internet search and found that you can get syphilis from kissing and hpv from hand to genitalia contact. I would like to know if my Symptoms suggest a oral syphilis infection or any other stds. Until I did this search I didn’t think stds except maybe hsv1 were transmitted through kissing. I have s girlfriend and I am worried that I caught something and will give it to her. Please let me know if you think I got hpv from this encounter or the odds I might have caught hpv or any other std, and how long I need to wait to get tested so the results are accurate. One thing that makes me very nervous which I though you should k is is this women offered to give me oral sex unprotected but we did not do it. Though it makes me think she may have some stds. I have already kissed my girlfriend since the incident and would like to know if you think I gave her something already and when testing will be accurate. Thank you so much for your time Doctors.

Welcome to our Forum. thanks for your confidence in our service. I'll be glad to comment. The internet is not your friend here. While the internet is a great means of communication, it is a terrible, often misleading source of health information, particularly when it comes to STIs. The statements there are unedited and much of what is said is out of date, taken out of context, misinterpreted or just plain wrong. In the same way that people are occasionally struck by lightening, people occasionally get STIs from kissing but, in general, the risk for infection is very, very low and not a concern. We rarely suggest testing for STIs following the sorts of exposures you describe. Not only is kissing very, very low risk but, you do not, know that your partner had any STI and even if she did, most exposures to infected partners do not lead to infection. I should also add that no STIs are spread by touching of the sort you describe.
In the absence of any lesion the sensation you are experiencing on your tongue does not suggest any STI. I really see no scientific or medical need for testing of any sort. That said, if you choose to test to prove to yourself that you did not acquire infection, negative tests at this time will prove that any symptoms that you might have are not due to an STI but some other problem.
I hope these comments are helpful. Please don't worry. EWH

Wow, your comments make me feel so much better. I was thinking getting tested would also help because I get anxious. I just want to make sure I understand…even though it’s only been like 4 days since the event if I get tested for syphills and the results will be accurate or do I need to wait 1-2 months. Sorry I don’t mean to ask twice. Thank you

I understand the desire for confirmation. Syphilis tests typically take 4-6 weeks to provide definitive answers.. The exception is in persons with symptoms or lesions. If your symptoms were due to syphilis, your test would be positive. EWH---

So I ordered a syhillis test online and went to lapcorp yesterday and got blood drawn. The result already came in this morning (I guess it’s accurate) and it said non detectable. So I guess I can assume the feeling on my tongue is not syphillis and that I have no reason to think I have syphillis. I am just curious if you would recommend I wait 4-6 weeks and get tested again. I really appreciate your time and you answering my question. Just a reminder the event took place just this past Friday. Thank you Dr

Sorry I also wanted to ask…while I am waiting the 4-6 weeks should I not have sex with my regular partner. Thank you

I can’t help but wonder why you would ask for advice and then choose to ignore it. As I told you earlier, I would not have even suggested testing for the exposure you describe. Thus, logically I see no reason for you to test again in 4 to 6 weeks. Likewise, I see no reason for you to abstain from unprotected intercourse with your regular partner related to the exposure and events you describe above.
Your current test results from LabCorp, taking less than a week following your exposure, shows that you do not have Syphilis at this time. Had you been exposed to Syphilis it would take, on average, three weeks for a lesion to appear and up to 4 to 6 weeks for a blood test to become positive. Given the no risk nature of your encounter however I see no reason for concern or testing. If your guilt and anxiety require you to retest in the future or to abstain, so be it. I am confident that whenever you get around to re-testing, should you choose to do it, your test results will show once again that you did not require Syphilis.
Sorry if this reply seems harsh. You asked for a science-based expert answer and got it. You are not at risk for Syphilis. E
