[Question #8389] Red and Burning Frenulum

Hello,

Today I noticed my frenulum is  irritated/inflamed.  It burns when water hits it in the shower and I can feel the slight stinging constantly.  I masturbate without lube daily so I may have injured it.  I’m not sure.  Also, have had frequent urination over the last couple of days.  Not sure if that is significant.  But, it was noticeably different, so I thought I would mention it as well.  I don’t really notice any blisters or anything like that but more of a redness.

My last sexual encounter was two weeks ago to the day.  It involved unprotected oral sex only.

My question is if I should be concerned about an std.  Or more accurately when should I start being concerned about an std?  If yes, then which std does this sound typical of? Also, what would indicate std over injury or vice versa?  I plan to make an appointment with my urologist ASAP.  But, just looking for some insight beforehand.

Thank you

Welcome back to the forum. Thank you for your continued confidence in our services.

No STD is a likely cause of this. Of course without seeing your inflamed frenulum, I can only make educated guesses about the cause. Really the only STD likely to cause external skin inflammation of this sort is herpes, but this doesn't seem to have started as a blister-like lesion typical for herpes. And two weeks is on the long side for incubation period for new herpes, so I doubt it has any relationship to your most recent sexual encounter. Syphilis can cause external genital sore (chancre), but this doesn't sound at all like a chancre. My best guess is that as you apparently suspect yourself, it is the result of minor trauma during masturbation.

You're definitely on the right track in your decision to seek in person medical care. I'll be interested to hear the outcome after you have seen the urologist. In the meantime, I wouldn't be very worried about any STD.

Best regards--  HHH, MD

Thank you Doctor.

I have my appointment scheduled for this upcoming Tuesday.  I checked it again this morning and it has a moist appearance.  So it is looking red and moist and the discomfort is the same.  Not sure if that changes your opinion on it.

If so, please advise.  If not, I will update this post after my visit to let you know what the urologist says.

Thanks again.

The changing appearance doesn't change my opinions or advice. Until you are seen by your doctor, keep the area clean and dry (about twice a day wash with soap and water and gently dry the area afterward) and use no ointments, creams, or other treatment of any kind. I look forward to hearing the outcome of your visit with the urologist.---

Hello doctor,

Just wanted to update the post after my visit.  He told me that this was a very mild yeast infection.  I had mentioned to him that the day before, I started taking antibiotics for an infection that I had on my gums.  He told me that sometimes antibiotics can cause yeast infections.  I also told him that I go to the gym daily, and he said that could be a contributing factor as well.

He prescribed me diflucan and said it should clear up within a day or two.  He said the oral sex that I received didn’t have anything to do with what was going on.

I appreciate you giving me peace of mind before my visit.

Thanks

Glad to hear this information. Indeed, antibiotics often predispose to yeast infections.

Thanks for the thanks. I'm glad to have helped. Take care and stay safe.
