[Question #8403] Herpes risk

I have a situation. I am 27, Hispanic, and have been married for the past three years. On Tuesday, November 9th, I had a protected encounter with a friend from high school. I was wondering what would be my actual risk. I Have tested negative for herpes, both 1&2 IGG, since I am 18 in my yearly checkups and have never had symptoms so far, neither oral nor genital. I got scared and tested the whole panel, including both herpes igg and negative, to have a baseline. On the 9th, Tuesday had sex with a condom. I drank, so I could not really last a long time in, condom was kind of loose or get it up, and well kept on getting out. I would like to believe that the friction was at max, ten seconds at once, and had to stop since I was not working maybe all together like 5 minutes or less? I usually use clippers for shaving, and well, I had not used them, so I had a decent amount of hair. She had no visible sores in the area. I am circumcised. I wore a condom but not sure if it covered the whole base. My friend agreed to take an std test with whom this incident happened and she was negative for both(surprising because she gets cold sores in the chin (since high school), Monday the 15th. Her last partner was in July Questions:
Day 10, no symptoms or pain, minor groin ich but goes away with powder well be seen on the 22 for a general view if were to catch when would I likely see them and in which location? I have ingrown hair where the underwear waistband is. Should I avoid sex with my wife? When should I expect them? If she happens to be positive for HSV 2 (she has had HSV1 since high school s a blister in the chin, but there was no oral sex involved) and I don’t develop symptoms, let’s say in 14 days. After exposure, should I test? If I test negative at six weeks should i drop it? What do you think?.Thanks for your help

I think the risk from a protected encounter, once, is a very very low risk experience.  Minor ache in the groin is not diagnostic of anything.  If you were to contract HSV from this person, lesions would likely be at the base of the penis, where it joins your body.  And if you were going to get symptoms, they would show up within 2-10 days.  So by now!
The IGG test misses 30% of HSV 1 infections so no surprise that it missed it in her.  But great news that she is negative for HSV 2 and her last partner was in July.
Given all of this information - no lesions, her testing negative, condom use, I would say there is probably a one in a million chance that you got HSV 2 from her at this encounter.  If I were in your situation, I would resume sex with my regular partner

Hi, thank you for your answer, and I want to give you an update here. It has been day 14th. I had mean-looking ingrown hair and sent the pictures to my urologist and said it is nothing to worry about, mainly because it is close to the underwear waistband instead of more comparable to the penis. It did not hurt or burn or itch. No fever, no flu, no blisters like in the pictures you find online, nothing near the penis base, and feel fine. My friend's test came negative for everything done at any lab (surprising since high school, she got cold sores in her chin more than nine years ago) but negative for everything, including HSV1. She states that her last partner was in July and that I was the recent one this month. Meaning her test should be accurate. I see her testing was a sign of good faith, and I should not doubt her lying.
We did not engage in oral sex and kissed briefly, so I focused mainly on HSV 2. I was thinking of taking an igg at six weeks. First, to make sure I am okay at 70%. If I do not see any clear blisters, should I test? If I were to get symptoms (day 14), I would have some pain in the penis base area, redness, or discomfort?
Do you know if coconut oil prevents herpes outbreaks, sometimes I get some tingling or itching in the lips but apply some coconut oil, and it goes away?
I take immune boosters, vitamin c, magnesium, and so on. Would that make herpes infection asymptomatic?  Also, do you trust the mixed 1/2 igg herpes test? I am from the USA but live in Germany, and they have difficulties like Herpes 1/2 Igg and Herpes 2 Igg. However, they seem not to test individually for 1.
I want to make an informed decision and take care of my wife. So if I could get your input, that would be awesome. Thank you so much for your information. If anything, I will give you an update.

I frankly don't think you need to test at all.  She is negative, the sex was protected, you have no symptoms, it doesn't make sense to test.  Six percent of the time, and IgG will yield a low positive results and half of those are false positives.  Why risk it when the contact you had does not present and concerns for herpes.
All those things you take would not make herpes asymptomatic, no.  And I definitely don't think you want the combined test if that's all they have.
I know you are trying to protect your wife, but the odds are strongly against you being infected here.  I don't suggest testing.

Dear Terri,

Thank you for your advice, and trust me that I will follow your word and not test. Just some more things, and I will let it go.
I still have this ingrown hair. I pulled the dead skin today morning, and it felt like a regular pimple. The top was hard solid and bled a bit. It is closer to the waistline, where the underwear elastic band is compared, than towards the base of the penis. The urologist saw it at five days in person and ten days by picture and said it was just ugly. My GP saw it 13 days and agreed that it looked like a pimple ingrown and should not worry.  So far, no blisters like the pictures online or the cold sore that someone would get in the lips. When I was a teenager I caught molluscum from all over my legs, abdomen, and genital area. I got some burned in my penis base because they were everywhere, wouldn't that make the skin weaker?  As of today, it is day 16, and no symptoms like that. I was thinking of waiting 20 days, and if nothing, I would proceed to go back to my everyday sexual life with my partner.  Either way, if nothing comes up I will go back to my normal life. Thank you Terri for your advice in advance, happy thanksgiving!

I think you have a good plan there.  The people who see this in person are in a far better position to know what's going on than I am and the ingrown hair location seems very high up for herpes also.
