[Question #8490] Follow-up syphilis risk #8384

Hello,

I went to my doctor for bloodtest on Dec 8th for hiv and syphilis test. Exactly one month after my date my hiv duo test and syphilis test came back negative. My doctor said I should typically see the chancre on my penis, but so far I didn’t have. This week I went back to my doctor because I noticed a red spot on my hard palate which had a burning sensation, but my doctor didn’t really relate it to syphilis and prescribed me mouth wash. After use of mouth wash the spot was nearly gone the next day. But the second day I had mild sore throat which I still have and feel a bit tired as well.
I know Dr Hook said testing at 6 weeks for conclusive results but after 4 weeks I couldn’t wait  so I tested. My doctor said this week not to overtest because I had done to many testing this year and so this week I didn’t had test for hiv and syphilis.
As bottom I always uses condoms and never had a broken condom and on  Nov 8th I had protected anal intercourse and not after that. The only thing I did was giving bj with condom on Nov 13th and I received 3 handjobs.

I feel worried  and not feeling that well. Could I still have syphilis or hiv?

Kind regards

Welcome back to our forum and happy new year. As you begin 2022 I would urge you to work to address your anxiety and tendency for over testing.  The symptoms you described are not at all suggestive of HIV or syphilis but suggest that you are being overly watchful is the result of your anxiety and concern.  I agree with your doctor that you have a tendency to test more than is needed as well as to use this forum more than is needed for questions which are, in large part, repetitive.   Results of your four week tests for both Syphilis and HIV are very, very strong evidence that you have neither of these diseases.  There is close to zero chance that either your HIV or your syphilis test will become positive between four and six weeks. Hello,

I wanted to go back to my doctor to check my sore throat but she was on holiday. Now and then I had this week headaches, especially today. I just don’t feel fit and I think that it must std telated. Sore throat, red spot palate, feeling tired and headaches but my symptoms are not constant and not all together. Indeed I should work on my anxiety this year and I will. I am sorry to use this forum but your medical advice and that from Dr Handsfield always helped me a lot here. I understand as well that I can’t always ask questions after an event. I will get help promise.

1) So if I understand you correct, I should move on with my latest labresults ?
2) Any other stds I should check for like chlamydia, gonorrhea,…?
3) Giving and receiving handjob without semen on me as giving bj with condom, can these activities always be 100% safe?
4) Would you say based on what you read from me, conclude that I am std-free ?

I have a new partner and we are engaging ourselves in monogamous relationship. My new partner doesn’t have any stds and we haven’t had intercourse yet. So the questions above are not only important to me but for my partner as well.

1.  Correct
2. I presume you were tested previously.  If so, certainly no need for further testing
3.  Correct.  These are no risk activities as you’ve been told in the past
4.  Yes

Hello,

I didn’t check previously for other stds like chlamydia and gonorrhea. These are done by pcr tests only here and I had only my blood checked for hiv and syphilis.
Anyway your provided answers reassured me a lot. Thanks for saying I am free from hiv and syphilis. My partner are thrilled with the good news too and we are reliefed.  We are waiting a long time to start intercourse.
Your advice is like a present to us for the new year. I’ll seek help for my anxiety and glad to found a steady partner.

Happy New Year

Hello,

I made an appointment for my anxiety. I can go in February. I now have seemingly like a wound between my gums and cheek upper teeth. For my anxiety as you stated before I am overly watchful but it is really like a wound more like big red spot with a cut about 1 cm . Also if I contact my doctor I will start beginning overthinking and want to draw my blood again. That won’t help me in the long run for my anxiety. I was really afraid that I encountered someone who has or had syphilis. That increased my anxiety. My bloodwork seems reassuring you said. But I saw that thing in my mouth and being anxious about hiv and syphilis now.
Could the first red spot I saw and went day after away, now that wound be a sign of sti somehow? In the meanwhile I did not have intercourse with my new partner when I noticed that thing in my mouth. I was examing my mouth and pulled my upper lip away and then I saw it.
Suppose is it syphilis, I am scared for ocular syphilis because I have only one good eye.
When can testing  giving certainty at how many weeks and what else should I test for?
Can a general bloodtest without testing for sti’s indicate something?

Sorry but that wound made me very very anxious.

Kind regards.
