[Question #8536] HIV oraquick

Hello Doctors,

Last June I had travelled to Dubai where had a brief encounter with a CSW which was condom protected and it lasted for less than a minute and there was NO kissing and NO oral. Almost after 15 weeks I did ORAQUICK test and it came negative.
I have 2 concerns -

1. I was really nervous with the upcoming result. So after swabbing the jaw and placing the swab in the solution I started driving to skip the waiting time which was making me really nervous. So my concern is that this driving the car and  the solution moving while i drive the car affect the result.

2. Somewhere in the forum i read that oraquick is not 100% conclusive even after 12 weeks. So should I get tested again or be satisfied with the negative result.

Thank you.

Apologies, I accidentally hit submit before I had completed my response. Here is the complete response. Welcome to our forum and thanks for your confidence. I’ll be glad to comment. As background information, please be aware that HIV is quite uncommon among commercial sex workers in Dubai. In addition the encounter you described was condom protected. Finally the risk for acquiring HIV following unprotected vaginal sex with an untreated HIV infected partner is less than one infection for every 2000 acts of intercourse. Putting this information together, had you ask me if you needed to test, my reply would be that it was not necessary and that the encounter you describe was virtually no risk for HIV. I know of no information and cannot think of any scientific reason why letting the test process while you were driving in a car would have a negative effect on the reliability of your test results. Finally, you are correct that the oraquick HIV tests very rarely but more often than lab-based tests, fail to detect infections, particularly relatively soon after acquisition of infection. Having said that, given the facts that I have provided above and the fact that you tested 15 weeks following exposure, I would have a great confidence in your results.  While I personally do not believe it is necessary, if you choose to retest with a laboratory based test for your own assurance, virtually any test you take will provide reliable results.  I hope this information is helpful to you. If any part of my reply is unclear please feel free to use you were up to two follow ups for clarification. EWH---
