Hello

Im a 36 years old man living in Sweden. Last saturday night I had unprotected vaginal sex for about 2 minutes with a swedish 29 years old woman. There was also unprotected oral sex on both of us.  First Time I met her and dont know much about her. Met her on a dating app.
Today, friday Afternoon(almost 6 days since exposure) I am starting to get a sore throat, some muscle pain and somewhat a hightened temperature (37,6C so far).
Could this be beginning symptoms of ars or do they never show up this early?
In my mind its a pretty big risk its ars so a lot of thinking about how my new life with hiv will become has been going on tonight. How big a risk would you say it is?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to our Forum and thanks for your confidence in our service.  I’ll be glad to comment.

Your symptoms of sore throat, muscle aches, and a low grade fever are suggestive of the ARS although the fever of the ARS is typically substantially higher ( over 39 degrees).  The onset is likewise on the early side for the ARS. These same symptoms are shared by numerous other far more common viral infections including influenza, COVID-19, and many other common viral illnesses.  You don’t say too much about your partner but untreated HIV is relatively uncommon among Swedish women.

I’d be surprised if this was the ars.  Statistically, it is likely your symptoms are due to something other than HIV.  The best way to be sure this is notHIV is to test with a 4th generation, combination HIV antigen/antibody test.  These tests are typically positive among persons experiencing the ARS.

I hope this information is helpful.  Please feel free to use your follow ups for clarification.  EWH

Thanks for your answer.

Today waking up my temperature was 37C. I guess my temperature would increase if I was starting to get ars and not decrease?
How soon can i take a 4th gen test too see if its ars or not?
Is it possible to get these symptoms from anxiety? Because after the exposure ive had a lot of it due to fear of hiv.

Typically a 4th generation test will be positive a day or two after the onset of symptoms.   The symptoms are due to the interactions between the virus and newly forming antibodies.

Anxiety can certainly lead to amplification of symptoms and even the impression that normal sensations which are typically not noticed are symptoms.

At this time a negative test would be strong evidence that your symptoms are not due to
HIV.

On wednesday(10 days after exposure) I will go for a 4th gen hiv test and chlamydia/ghonorrea test.
If my symptoms are because of an early hiv infection the hiv test most likely would be positive then right?
Will then go back 6 weeks after exposure for a conclusive hiv test.
Even though i know the risk is tiny i have hiv im really anxious. Really tough to wait five more weeks to know for sure.

Two days ago I also got some reddish skin on both of my cheeks. Still there. Does this sound like ars rash?

You are correct.  If your symptoms were due to HIV, the 4th generation test would be positive.  With a negative test you can be completely confident that your symptoms were not due to HIV but your overall test results for asymptomatic acquisition of HIV (only about half of infected persons develop the ARS, at most) will not be conclusive until 6 weeks after your encounter.

Your tests for gonorrhea and chlamydia will be conclusive as well

The redness you describe sounds nothing like the rash of the ARS.

Please don't worry.  EWH
