[Question #8662] Hiv test

Hello doctors,
I recently asked a question about hemolytic serum and hiv test. Thanks so much for the reply.
I will tell you my story again to make this easier. Im female, had an exposure about Six months ago with a man. Got tested last week with an hiv antibody test which was negative.
A day after my hiv antibody test i got tested for covid 19 and that came out positive.. i had/have no symptoms. Is my negative hiv antibody test still conclusively negative?
Thanks for your reply,
Moni

Welcome back to the form. I’ll be glad to comment.
FYI, I reviewed your earlier interaction with Dr. Handsfield and agree with all he said. The results of your recent negative HIV test are conclusive and the fact that you were diagnosed with COVID-19 shortly after you had your test taken does not change that. COVID-19 has been associated with a slight increase in falsely positive tests for HIV which can readily be ruled out by normal laboratory procedures but has NOT been associated with falsely negative results. You can have complete confidence in your test results. You did not get HIV from the exposure of concern. EWH

Hello doctor Hook,
Thank you very much for your reply. I have two more questions, im so anxious about all of this.
Firstly, does it matter which variant of covid19 i was diagnosed with? Would any covid variant have any effect on my negative hiv antibody test?
Secondly, i got my days wrong, i was tested for covid two days after my hiv test. Does that make any difference for the results of my hiv test?
Can i still have complete confidence in my negative hiv antibody only test?
Thank you very much,
Moni

No, it is irrelevant which COVID-19 variant you were infected with. None of these cause test for HIV to be falsely negative.
Similarly, the timing of the test makes no difference. You can have complete confidence in your results. EWH

Hello doctor Hook,
Thank you for your reply.
I think, if i was tested for covid on the Day of my hiv antibody test that i would have also tested positive for covid. I assume that also doesn't change my negative hiv result?
Last question and i know its a repetitive one: is my negative hiv antibody test result still conclusively negative even with covid19 (any variant) at any stage of the covid infection?
Thank you.

Your questions are repetitive. As you know we provide three responses to each clients questions and this is my third response. This Response will conclude this thread. Please believe your test results, no matter which day you were tested for HIV and for COVID-19. Your results are conclusive. False negative results are not a problem. You do not have HIV. Not with any variant of HIV. It is past time for you to put your concerns aside and move forward.
I hope That the information I have provided will be helpful to you in putting your unwarranted concerns aside and moving forward. Take care and please don’t worry. EWH
