[Question #8665] HSV1 transmission

There seems to be conflicting information about this online, so I wanted to ask an expert. So many places tell you to date other HSV positive people, but data still seems inconsistent regarding transmission to different locations. Here's the question: If I have HSV type 1 genital and my boyfriend has HSV type 1 oral, can he get it in his genital area from me from vaginal intercourse (without an outbreak). Some sites say if you both have the same type of hsv, even if different locations, then antibodies will protect you from getting it in another location, but other sites says it can still be spread to different areas. Hence my confusion. Thank you for your time.

Good question. The prevailing opinion about this is that once you have a specific type of HSV, in your case HSV 1, in a well established infection (more than four months out from a new infection), it is very unlikely that you would get it at a new location on your body. In my 38 year career, I have seen ONE person who told me that she had had cold sores when she was young and now had HSV 1 genitally. Another person told me it happened to them over my forum at westoverheights.com. So, if it happens, it happens very rarely for sure. If I were in your situation, I don't think I would spend any time worrying about this.
