[Question #8675] HSV-1 - How to reduce transmission

Hello. I get 2 or so cold sores per year. What is the best way to prevent transmission to a sexual partner? Aside from abstinence. I know to avoid contact when I feel one coming on, until well after it heals. I am wondering more about the asymptomatic times between outbreaks. Thanks

The best way to reduce transmission is to 1) no giving oral sex when an outbreak is present, of courseĀ You probably know that
You could also take antiviral medication to reduce the risk of transmission.
I would also recommend that your current partner describe any cold sore history and./ or take an IgG test to see they might already been infected with HSV 1. About 70% of those infected with HSV 1 are not aware that they have the infection, and about half the population is infected with HSV 1, so before working too hard to prevent transmission, a regular partner might want to be tested to see if these methods need to be put into place.
