[Question #8690] Hiv ab test

Hello doctors,
Im so relieved tot have found this site, i already browsed a little bit and found some closure already. But i still want to ask my question just to give me peace in my mind. Thank you for providing this service.
Firstly, i had an exposure to a male, about 2 years ago. I know that's a very long time to stress about this and that is why i got tested last week for hiv. They used a hiv 1/2 AB (which i assume means antibody) test. The test was negative. The same day i was tested for hiv, i received a message that i had a covid risk exposure 7 days before my hiv ab test. I obviously got tested right away by pcr test for covid, still waiting on my results.
If the covid test i took turns out to be positive, is my negative hiv antibody test still conclusively negative? Does having covid have any effect on hiv ab tests?
Greetings

Welcome to the forum. Thank you for your confidence in our services.

Two common themes on this forum, which you can see repeatedly if you browse enough threads, are first that the HIV blood tests are among the most accurate diagnostic tests ever developed, and the results overrule all other potential predictors of someone having HIV, such as exposure history and symptoms; and second that there are few if any medical conditions or medications that have any effect on test reliability. And for sure COVID-19 infection or vaccination have no effect: your negative test result is definitely valid and reliable, regardless of the result of your COVID test. (I hope it's negative -- and also hope you have been vaccinated against COVID!).
I hope these comments are helpful. Let me know if anything isn't clear.

Hi doctor Handsfield,
Thank you for the answer. I received my covid result, unfortunately IT is positive for covid. Still no symptoms, but i think that's because im vaccinated. I've always been careful but yeah it can happen.
So i read on this site that a covid infection can cause a false positive for hiv, but a covid infection can not cause a false negative antibody test for hiv. Am i correct?
I can still believe in my negative hiv antibody test results from an exposure two years ago?
Thank you for your time and knowledge.

Something you "read on this site" wasn't written any of the moderators, and no user made such a statement that I recall -- but I suppose that could have happened in a question answered by Dr. Hook or Ms. Warren. In any case, I am unaware of any scientific reports (or media reports) that COVID causes false positive HIV test results and from a biologic or physiologic standpoint do not understand how that could happen. And as I said, there is no reason to suspect it would cause false-negative HIV test results.---

Hi dr Handsfield,
Thanks for your reply, i feel much better.
I read an answer from dr. Hook in another tread, where the doctor said that a covid infection is associated with false positives for hiv but not with false negative for hiv.
Have a nice day

You may be confusing HIV and syphilis testing, which both Dr. Hook and I have mentioned on the forum. There are reports in the medical literature of false positive nontreponemal syphilis antibody tests (e.g. VDRL, RPR) with COVID-19 immuization, and I am peronally aware of a few cases of apparent false positives following COVID-19 itself. But I'm still unaware of effects on HIV testing. If it happens, it must be very rare.
Thanks for the good wishes; same to you. I'm glad to have helped.
