[Question #8694] Herpes Scare

Hello,

I am a male and had unprotected sex with a female 5 days ago. I don’t know her status regarding STIs but she she said she is clean. I am waiting at least a week to start testing but did have a curious symptom that I’m not sure if it’s anything or not. The tip of penis as of this morning has a slight itchy sensation. It’s not consistent and nothing extremely major but was concerned as I’ve heard it could be an early sign a herpes lesion is about to start. I was wondering when I could test and if so does this sound like an early symptom? And if it’s not what symptoms of herpes should I be on the lookout for and for how long til I can assume I’m fine? I’ve noticed herpes testing is not included unless you ask. Thanks!!

It's hard to know what the itching sensation would be about, but I would encourage you to keep an eye on the area you describe.  Testing for herpes antibody can't be done as early as testing for other STI's - you should wait at least 6 weeks for a preliminary result and 12 weeks for a final one.  IF you were going to develop symptoms of herpes from this encounter, symptoms would develop within 2 -10 days normally.  If you have other question about this, do let me know.
