[Question #8722] Doubting

Hi doctors,
I've got a question. In my country, the rules for covid protocol have been totally released, meaning no more masks and everything.
I got tested after a possible exposure for hiv. This test took place about 10 months after the exposure with a antibody only hiv test. Hiv test was negative and i was fine. Then i started worrying about having covid (and not know about it) at the same time of my hiv antibody test. If i would have had covid at the same time as my hiv test, would the covid have any effect on a hiv antibody test? Can i relax even if i had covid at the same time as my hiv test?

Sorry, to clarify, i don't know if i had covid at the time of testing for hiv. Im asking if i would have had covid, and didn't know about it, at the same time that i took my hiv ab test, would the covid infection interfere with the hiv ab test? Sorry english is not my native language.

Welcome to our forum and thanks for your question.
Recent research shows that persons who have COVID-19 at the time of testing may have a falsely positive test for HIV but there are no data to suggest that a person with Covid would be less likely to be detected with tests, including antibody only tests. You can have complete confidence in your test results. You did not acquire HIV from the encounter you were concerned about. EWH

Hi doctor Hook,
Thank you for the info.
Just so i know i understood correctly: false positives test for hiv might happen if you have covid, but false negatives for hiv with an antibody test do not happen in people with covid. Correct?
Thanks!

Hi doctor Hook,
The reading i ask this question is because my crp level was higher then normal. My doctor didn't seem troubled by it, so neither am i. I know that higher then normal crp levels could mean anything, not just covid.
But it still got me worrying about the possibility of having covid without symptoms and getting tested for hiv with antibody test at the same time.
So to conclude this once and for all:
Am i correct that my negative hiv antibody test is conclusively negative, even if i had asymptomatic covid at the time of testing for hiv?
Thank you for your reply.

Final Response
You are correct. PLEASE believe your negative test. Whether you had COVID-19 in the past would have no impact in your negative test results. Your results are conclusive.
The CRP is a highly non-specific test. Elevation of the CRP is not an indication of HIV. This concludes this thread. Take care. EWH

Just to clarify, im talking about having covid without symptoms at the time of testing for hiv. Does covid interfere with the hiv antibody test in any way?
Hopefully you van still reply

Final response. COVID-19, whether asymptomatic or not, would not interfere with your antibody test as described. REally.
End of thread. EWH
