[Question #8757] Dying of anxiety
|
Dr., I am dying of anxiety because my wife’s dermatologist has just received results of her nail exams and found that she has yeast and not fungal infections. The Dr. Has, therefore, recommended blood tests and included a test for HIV. Simply put, can yeast infections of fingernails and toenails be a symptom of HIV? This request for an HIV is killing me. Advice, please.

That your wife's doctor ordered an HIV test doesn't mean a high likelihood her nail problem is the result of HIV infection. For every person with such nail infections, probably under one in a thousand has HIV. You can expect her test to be negative.

Glad to hear of your wife's result, but of course not surprised. There was little chance she would test positive. That said, I remain disappointed that you haven't been tested yourself. Since you are concerned you might have HIV, you have an ethical obligation, and a moral obligation to your wife, to be tested. But I do hope these discussions have been helpful.---
