[Question #8806] Testing

I was originally diagnosed with HSV type 1 in 2009 they did a culture as well as blood test. I also had a follow up culture and another blood test that confirmed HSV type 1. I went to the gynecologist in June and April for two vaginal lumps that they did a culture on and came back negative for either type 1 or 2. I went again about two weeks ago for a vaginal lump and the doctor reported that she believes I am experiencing ingrown hairs that have become infected. She recommended that I do blood work again and wrote an order for HSV IGM and IGG. Unfortunately, the lab messed up and only ran HSV IGM which was negative for both. I experience extreme anxiety waiting for the results. My question is do I repeat the IGG test? Also, QUest diagnostic has the Herpes select IGG type specific antibody testing ELISA and I was informed I can receive the results in 1 day. Im not sure if it is worth putting myself through this test. I was considering just doing the HSV 2 test. Im concerned about possible false positive.

The IgM test is poor and should not be relied upon either way - positive or negative.
If there are hairs coming out of the bumps, then they are likely to be ingrown hairs and not herpes.
I am assuming that your HSV 1 was genital, yes? You mentioned that the swab and culture were positive for HSV 1 but didn't mention from what locationl.
We can look at your values if you do test, if positive and help you know if you should obtain a confirmatory test, if you do it.
What are thinking at this point?

Yes I was diagnosed with HSV 1 genitally in 2009. I tested again with blood draw in 2011 which was positive for HSV i (17.0 was the values) and the negative for HSV 2 (0.02 was the value). After a six month relationship in which I only engaged in oral sex once with my partner I decided to do the lab work again which was in 2019 and I had waited well over 3 months to test. my value was positive again for HSV 1 and negative for HSV 2 however the value went up to 0.10. Should I be concerned that my values for HSV 2 fluctuated, however, remained in the negative value range? That is the only reason I was considering going through with the lab work again this time because my values for HSV 2 fluctuated from 0.02 to 0.10 from 2011-2019.
I’m just concerned about retesting with blood test and getting a false positive. Is it better to test at a regular lab or is it okay to test with the rapid at Quest diagnostics?

No, you absolutely should not be concerned that the negative value fluctuated. I would be more concerned if it didn't! It is very normal to fluctuate.
I'm not sure about the distinction that you are making between a regular lab and a rapid test at Quest - Quest is a regular lab.
But I don't think you need another test.
