[Question #8852] Worried

Hello experts,

First of all that thank you all so much for what you do.

I am a relatively healthy 39 year old man.  13 days ago i received a hand job at massage parlor.  Her pants remained on the entire time, but she did reveal her breasts and a touched them some .

I know this is supposed to be a risk free activity, but i am having some issues.  Approximately 10 days after the incident i began to feel leg soreness mostly on my right leg, but i have felt so me soreness on the left leg as well.  The lymph node may be swollen, but i can't really tell.   I haven't noticed any lesions whatsoever on my penis.  I have noticed some tingling, but i do think this is probably my nerves getting the best of me.  I also have a bit of a headache which started maybe yesterday.

What concerns me is that these "symptoms" are very similar to when I am pretty sure I acquired HSV1 after receiving unprotected oral sex from a CSW years ago.  I never had any lesions, but after that incident, but my lymph node on my right leg did swell up to the size of an m&m and didn't go down in size for months.  I also dealt with leg soreness for months.  I believe I acquired HSV1 because  I got a negative HSV1 result after the incident, then 2 equivocal results and then finally positive.  And after that i have never seen another negative or equivocal HSV1 results.  So I am pretty sure I got HSV1 on my penis after that event even though I have never seen any blisters on my penis to this day.

My question is could this be a non-blister response to another HSV infection?  Does even make any sense? Have you heard of anything like this before?

Could this be any STI or is this some combination of my nerves and some other infection that's causing the leg soreness?

I haven't had sex with my wife since this incident, but mostly because our schedules haven't been aligned.  Of this turns out to be an STI it would definitely be the end of our marriage so that had me a bit stressed.

Thank you in advance for your response.

You are correct - your contact was 100% risk-free. 100%.  There was no kind of contact that presented a risk to acquire herpes.  I see no reason whatsoever to postpone having sex with your wife at this point because of this incident.

In regards to your previous experience and diagnosis of HSV 1.  The IgG test for HSV 1 is deeply flawed.  It misses 30% of infections, compared to the gold standard western blot, and also has false positives.  Would you mind telling me what your index values have been for the equivocal and positive results?  I am assuming from your post that you subsequently did the test again?  What were those results?

Thank you for the response Terri.  I appreciate it very much.

I guess my crazy worry is that she had whitlow that I didn't notice or check for.   I am sick only a once every few years ago so.  That is what makes these lower body aches and mild headache concerning.   I also have discomfort on the right side of my shaft (which feels like it's under the skin not on the surface), which it were due to friction from the massage I would think this would have passed since I am 15 days out.

But if you tell me that my risk is zero for herpes or any other STI (or close to it as Dr. HHH says) then I will go with that.  I don't want to belabor the point with people with decades of experience in this area.

As far as my HSV1 numbers:

1) < .91 05/06/2016  2 months and 23 days after incident
2) 1.04 05/17/2016 3 months and 7 days after incident
3) .93  06/16/2016 4 months and 5 days
3) .96  08/17/2016 6 months 4 days
4) 1.99 12/05/2019 3 years later after the incident
5) 1.08 09/30/2020 4 years after the incident
6) 1.83 03/13/2021 5 years after the incident

Also; as an aside,  Could you talk to the technical people that are responsible for this site and ask if they can add boolean searches to the search engine? For instance, It would be great to be able to search for: "hand" and "genital".  Where those two words were present in the same post, but not next to each other.  This would make the search capability much more useful.

Thanks again

Have you kissed anyone in the past five years or received oral sex from anyone?  You could have a new infection if either of those are the case or this 1.83 could also be a false positive.
Let me know

Hi Terri.

No i haven't missed anyone or received oral sex from anyone besides my wife since that incident.

So before you cut me off,

Have you experienced anyone or heard credible reports of anyone getting an STI from receiving a hand job?

I understand that you all say that is no risk, but i would like clarity on if that means practically no risk because we've only seen a few cases or if you literally have never seen cases caused by hand to genital contact.

I'll try not to worry.

Thank you Terri.

Take care.

I have never heard of anyone getting an STI from a hand job and never will because that event simply doesn't present the right opportunity to acquire a bacteria or virus.  STI's come about from people's mouth or genital rubbing together in some way - those skin surfaces are very thin or one layer thick and can transfer virus or bacteria from one place to another.  But in your case, hands simply can't do that.  I know this has concerned you greatly but having someone masturbate your penis is not a way to contract an STI.
