[Question #8904] Hiv test and covid

I (f) had an unprotected sexual encounter to a man in september 2019. I got tested for hiv with an antibody only test on May 3 2021, then again on 7th of march 2022. the 2 hiv antibody-only tests were negative. My bloodwork at the two times of testing for hiv did show a high crp level and some other things that were high including high level of leukocytes and absolute neutrophils and trombocyts. dr asked if i was sick, i wasn't sick at time of testing for hiv. I got worried that the high crp and high leukocytes and the rest was because maybe i had covid, and didn't know about it, all two times i got tested for hiv with the hiv antibody test. My question is the following: if i had covid-19, without symptoms thus without me knowing i had covid, at the time of testing for hiv with an antibody-only test would the covid-19 interfere with my hiv antibody-only test? Can i be absolutely sure that i don't have hiv even if i would have had covid the two times i got tested for hiv with an hiv antibody test? Or do i need another hiv test?

Thanks

Welcome to the Forum and thanks for your questions.  You can have complete faith in your test results.  While COVID rarely may cause falsely positive HIV tests, it would not cause falsely negative HIV antibody tests, particularly on two occasions 11 months apart.  You can have confidence in your test results and do not need further HIV testing related to your September 2019 encounter.

You'll need to work with your doctor to address the reasons for your high CRP and leukocyte counts.  Take care.  EWH

Hello dr. Hook,

Thank you for your reassuring reply.

Maybe i should have asked for a covid test when i got tested both times for hiv. I didn't get tested for covid when i got tested for hiv.

So to conclude:
1)  i can be absolutely sure that i didn't get hiv from the encounter in 2019, even if i had covid at the two times i was tested for hiv with an hiv antibody test?
2) covid doesn't cause false negatives results for hiv, with an antibody test. Am i correct?

Thanks

Yes, you can be entirely confident that you did not acquire HIV from your 2019 encounter.  The results are conclusive.

COVID-19 does not cause falsely negative antibody tests for HIV.

Please don't worry.  EWH

Thank you again doctor Hook.

Maybe i'm overthinking this, but i looked online (i know, bad Idea) and i found out that SARS-CoV-2 is the virus that causes covid-19 started wondering/worrying if i asked my question wrong. So if i can just ask one more question:

1)Can SARS-CoV-2 (any variant) cause a false negative result for hiv on a hiv antibody-only test? Can SARS-CoV-2 (any variant) cause false negative hiv antibody tests?

Thank you

Sorry, i just wanted to be correct, i added some words to my previous question.

1)Can a SARS-CoV-2 infection (any variant) cause a false negative result for hiv on a hiv antibody-only test? Can SARS-CoV-2 infection (any variant) cause false negative hiv antibody tests?

Thank you in advance for answering this question

Your question was clear.  I’m sorry my answer was not.  SARS-CoV-2 does NOT caused falsely negative antibody tests.  The test results you described are conclusive.  You did not acquire HIV from your 2019 encounter.  There no scientific need for further testing.  EWH ---

Like you suggested, i had a talk with my doctor about the blood tests. Turns out that in May 2021 i had the high level of CRP, leukocytes, absolute neutrophils and thrombocytes etc. and of course the negative hiv antibody test. In march 2022 i only had a high level of CRP, the tests for high levels of leukocytes and the other things failed. Hiv antibody test did work and was negative. I hope this new info doesn't make any difference and that i can still be confident that i didn't get hiv from that exposure in 2019?

Thanks

Thanks for the additional information. This additional information and no way changes my assessment. Your HIV test to remains conclusive and should be believed. There was no need to repeat the test but if you have, it will only confirm that you do not have HIV. Please believe the results.

We provide up to three responses to each clients question. This is my fourth response to your somewhat repetitive questions. That this will be the final response for this thread which will be closed shortly. Take care. Please don’t worry about HIV. EWH
