How long after an initial exposure will genital herpes first appear?  I also think I read in one of the responses on this site that the initial outbreak would only appear where the body to body contact actually took place where one of the partners was infected.  So if I had vaginal sex only with a girl, then first symptoms would not show on by butt or anal area.  Is that true?

Most people, if they are going to have an outbreak with new infection, will have it within 2 to 10 days.  And yes, if you had vaginal sex (condom or no condom?), the outbreak would be on the penis if you had contracted herpes.  That is correct.  Not buttocks or anus only.
