[Question #9035] Discontinuation of Prep
|
Hello,
I had been taking Prep daily for about 3 months. I decided to stop taking it as I was rarely having sex.
About 4 or 5 days after stopping taking Prep I had a possible exposure.
I know this would mean there would be some Prep in my system but not enough to offer any real protection.
I got tested 5 weeks and 7.5 weeks after the exposure. Both 5th generation ag/ab tests. Both negative.
Are these results conclusive?
I am prone to anxiety and am worried as there was some prep in my system before the exposure the result might not be accurate…
I’ve spoken to the clinic they suggest and I agree I should go back on Prep - if anything for the peace of mine it offers me.

Welcome to her for him. Thanks for your question. I’ll be glad to comment.
Four or more days following taking your last dose of prep, the amount of drugs in your system would be minimal. As a result, Your Four week test following your exposure provide strong evidence that you were not infected and your 7.5 week follow up test provides conclusive evidence that you have not required HIV from your misstep. At this time it will be safe for you to resume taking PrEP. I would encourage you to do so.
I hope this information is helpful to you. If there are additional questions or any part of my response is unclear please don’t hesitate do use your up to two additional follow up questions for clarification. EWH

Thank you for your reply.
I have one follow up question.
After stopping Prep - when would you advise final follow up testing?
(To check for any breakthrough infection\delay)
I ask as in last couple I was taking Prep I was a bit laxed and missed a few doses. However, my only risk at this time was oral sex with another man.
I’ve had a HIV negative result, 8 weeks after stopping Prep.
Am I ok to start taking Prep now? Should I was for a negative test at 12 weeks?
I just want to be sure I’m HIV negative before starting Prep again.

Your negative HIV test obtained 8 weeks after your last dose of PrEP provides proof that you were not infected even if you were somewhat lax in taking the medication. It is safe to restart PrEP at this time. I see no need to wait longer before restarting your PrEP. EWH---
