[Question #9040] Anal warts and Anal Cancer

I have HPV.  I am female and 40 years old.  The strands I have of HPV are unknown.  I have had the same three anal warts for two years.  They haven’t grown or changed, but now I feel two tiny ones inside my anus.  What are the odds these are anal cancer?  My bowel movements are fine.  No itching.  No blood— well, sometimes a dot when I wipe too hard.  Sometimes I get anal cramping into my buttocks, but perhaps that is stress?  Just looking for some data/stats and piece of mind.  Does this sound like anal cancer at all?

Welcome to our firm. Thanks for your questions. I’ll be glad to comment. In reading your question I wondered if the presence of your three warts you have had for two years has been confirmed by your doctor.  There are many different processes besides warts including skin tags and hemorrhoids which can mimic warts at the rectum. The description you provide including the fact that they occasionally bleed slightly with wiping made me wonder if perhaps these were hemorrhoids rather than warts.

If the lesions you describe, both the ones that have been present for two years as well as the ones you have recently noted, are warts, they are almost certainly not cancer. The two strains of HPV which lead to development of about 95% of visible warts, 6 and 11, are not associated with the development of cancer.

Buttock cramping is not a symptom of other words for rectal cancer.

My advice would be to have your doctor/gynecologist take a look at the lesions you described, both for the purpose of providing you with the diagnosis and, if warranted, treatment.

I hope the information I provided is helpful. If any part of my response is unclear or you have additional questions, please don’t hesitate to use your up to 2 follow ups for clarification. EWH

Thank you so very much for the quick response!

I am guessing I have multiple strands of hpv.  The one that causes genital warts, and I do get abnormal cervical cells.  I get paps every year, and then every once in a while need a colposcopy.  Years ago I had a LEEP procedure.

Is the abnormal cervical cell strand perhaps a strand that could cause cancer also in the anus?  Where would I go to have a test to see what strand I have?

Thank you for the additional information. The HPV strains that cause visible genital or anal warts are different than the HPV strains which typically cause abnormal cervical cells detected by Pap smears. The strains which caused the abnormalities on Pap smear and lead you to need a LEEP typically are different from the strains that cause visible warts. The same HPV strains which commonly cause PAP smear abnormalities and cancer of the cervix can also cause cellular abnormalities or cancer of the rectum. Your gynecologist may be able to help evaluate your anal lesions. If she or he cannot, they should be able to refer you to someone who can help.  EWH ---
